Do cats forget you?

I had a male cat. He was about seven months old. He was sort of small, orange color with some tabby marks. I recognize him from other cats by a white patch on his tail. One day, he suddenly vanished! I spent about three lonely months without him. Then one day, I opened my gate, I saw a big orange color tabby cat sleeping. I recognized it by the white patch on its tail. It woke up and then purred. It approached me and started rubbing against me. It was already a year old. How does it still remember me?

probably remembered your smell. I have seen many stories similar to this where they have been seperated for years and the pet remembered the owner

No, they don't.  I've had cats most of my life.  They're much more intelligent than most people give them credit for - much smarter than dog, for example.
