This is somewhat similar to the famous Baseball catcher Yogi Berra when he said, "I didn't say everything that I said." Meaning, people wrongly attribute sayings to him that he really did not say.

In other words he's not smart at all. But just showing off. Other wise it doesn't make any sence.

He was bragging about how clever he thought he was. You know how some professors are kind of smug about how much they know, and how, when they teach it they kind of make it hard for some students who aren't catching on? That was what Wilde's meaning was. He thought he was just that clever.
