What does"era of appeasement"mean?
Quite apart from the difficulty of imagining public support for such a move, it was by no means clear how American power might be brought to bear and how welcome it might be to Europeans in the era of appeasement

Until 1941, Pearl Harbor attack. There was a question of which side would the US be on. The U.S. has a lot of Irish and Germans in it. So a certain segment of Europeans in Europe, would like like us helping the other side.
The NAZIs were also as anti communist. And were thought of like many dictators were thought of during the cold war. As a bulwark against communism.
Also, how far do we go. No body in this country wanted boots-on-the-ground. As in 1917.

"Era of appeasement" means a period in which governments were more likely to reply to challenges from other governments by offering peaceful solutions, rather than mobilizing military forces. A good example of governmental appeasement is shown by England's Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, trying to offer Adolf Hitler a peaceful solution to Hitler's apparent desire to occupy various parts of Europe, in the late 1930's.

An era is a time period of unspecified long duration.
Appeasement is when things are given up to try to satisfy a bad situation. For example, Russia takes Crimea from Ukraine. Instead of trying to enforce an agreement that it would not happen and possibly go to war, we essentially let Russia have it. It may be marked "disputed territory".Appeasement is done in the hope it goes no further.European countries did appeasement with Hitler. It didn't work.In the paragraph you show, it makes a statement that society in Europe is making concessions to satisfy certain issues instead of taking a stand and escalating the issues.
