It sounds like your house is haunted but as long as it's not a bad ghost you should be safe. Sometimes if a person dies suddenly they can't move on because they died too fast to process it. Just don't provoke them or ask them to do anything that's how people open that door and bring it into their reality.

Next time you hear it, go and try to find out if there is someone on the stairway. Sometimes houses make natural sound as they settle, which is an ongoing process. There could be others talking softly so as not to disturb others. Most ghosts and goblins tend to be very loud, because their soul purpose is to scare you so you leave the house.

I had a similar experience once. When I turned 18 I moved out of my parents home to live on my own and be independent. At that time even small one room apartments were quite expensive, but I was able to rent a really nice house for next to nothing because the tenants kept moving out claiming it was haunted. The rent kept coming down until it hit rock bottom, I was not afraid and went to live there.

I stayed there for a year, I came to suspect it was haunted too, hearing things like you do and a dog barking...After a year, I finally had enough and decided to move out. After I packed my stuff and loaded up my car and got ready to drive away. I heard a whisper from the back seat..."Aren't you glad we are finally moving out."
