Why is Gregory House (House, M.D.) so mean?
Cold, callous, manipulative, sarcastic, and not at all concerned with laws or ethical codes.
Hugh Laurie is one of my favorite actors (and people). Love Fry and Laurie. There's something very genuine about him no matter what he's doing.

He's Sherlock Holmes. Literally. Holmes was based upon Joseph Bell, a doctor who Doyle met as a student. The creators of House stated that they wanted to bring Sherlock Holmes back to his medical roots. House = Holmes, Wilson = Watson. Sherlock Holmes was obsessive, sarcastic, cold, etc. Therefore House shared those qualities.

For laughs. It's also why he's played by comedic actor Hugh Laurie. Didn't know Hugh Laurie was a comedic actor? Go watch Black Adder or A Bit of Fry and Laurie. He's not just comedic, he plays over the top comedic roles.
