Is it true that you seldom use ‘give a cry / a sigh’ instead of just saying ‘cry / sigh’?

It is true for me and most of the people I interact with. Yet, we do say "give a shout" or "give a hoot", but they don't mean shout or hoot.  they are idioms for "call or get in touch with (someone)" or "care about (something)".

That isn't true for me, as well as others with whom I'm familiar.

I've never heard anyone use either.  People cry or they sign.
