What fun things can I do in Chicago in January especially during a pandemic?
I decided I wanted to celebrate my 29th birthday in the Windy City and I want to know what cool fun things I can get into besides the typical stuff like go visit the “Bean”. Is there any hip hop bars downtown? What’s open and not open? Are they practicing social distancing? I just want to have a great time that’s all I asked for. Oh and I booked at the Freehand hotel 🏨

All bars and restaurants are closed. Unless they provide outside seating. Since it is snowy and 27-34 degrees (colder at night) I don’t know how much that would be fun. Even with tents and outside heaters.
There is plenty of great architecture and place to walk. You better bundle up from head to toe. The wind off the lake can be brutal.
Retail stores are open. They monitor how many customers are in the store and masks are required everywhere.

Nothing; for what really should be obvious reasons. Everything's closed, it's the worst time to be a tourist. Stay safe - stay home

Pretty much all of the attractions in the city are closed (zoo, aquarium, museums, Navy Pier, Willis Tower, etc), as are bars, restaurants, and clubs. You can get take-out, but that's it. Now is not the time to be a tourist in Chicago. None of that is likely to change before the end of January.

Right now, all Chicago and suburban restaurants and bars are closed (except for carry-out) because of the corona virus. Most museums, zoos, professional sports facilities, and public facilities are also closed. Social distancing and masks are required EVERYWHERE.
Most retail non-food stores are open, and outdoor park venues are open. You can walk outdoors and visit some of the stores and interesting neighborhoods. Public transportation is available, but some of the schedules have been reduced b/c few people want to use it. This will not change in the next couple of weeks.
