My mother was. As a result, she could write virtually equally well with either hand. My oldest brother was forced to switch when he was 11 yrs. old (1957-8). He had troubles with stuttering & occasionally wet his bed for about 2 years thereafter.
When i was in Gr. 1, Ms. Morris smacked me on my hand with a pointer for writing with my left hand. I flipped out. I bit, punched & kicked her. A couple of days later, my father & I met with the school principal. He said "You f-ed up one of my kids with your horseshit. You aren't going to do it to another one." He punched Mr. Mitchell right in the mouth, knocking clean over his desk. That was the last time that anyone tried to make me change.
As it is, I can write a little bit with my right hand. I can bat both ways in baseball, with about equal ability; catch or throw about equally well with either hand, & kick equally well with either foot. I can play goal in hockey either way, but can't do much when shooting "right." I play guitar left-handed, & can do a bit upside-down & backwards on a guitar that's strung right-handed,

I only hold a knife and fork the wrong way round, one teacher used to march across the canteen, grab them out of the hands and swap them over. He did this 6 or 7 times until I tipped my dinner over his head.

No. My teachers were always fascinated that I was ambidextrous.

I was punished at the last supper for being left handed. I was like, "hey if some of us just sat on the other side of the table we wouldn't bump elbows so much." but they wouldn't listen.

No, but it was not unusual up to the 1950s. Left handed people were considered clumsy and awkward, so left handed children were forced into using their right hands for writing. You heard the phrase "cack handed" for a clumsy person ? Well, "cack" meant left.

No I wasn't. I've heard of children being made to write with their right hand or they would be punished. That was a long time ago, though.
