Is it true that Larry King never prepared for interviews?

Larry himself said that, and that his reasoning was that the average audience member knew little or nothing about a given show guest.  So he preferred to begin as they would begin, and learn about the guest during the course of the show.  Is that even humanly possible?

If you watched his interviews -- yes, they were mostly terrible. I always thought he was awful at his job.

Yes it seems good strategy, although some hosts will do a bit of research on their guest.

Why would it not be humanly possible?  If you chat with someone at a social gathering, say a dinner, christmas, a wedding, a party or what ever, do you really bring along prepared questions to ask people?  =)
