My IP address was likely hacked? Some advice?

I received an email from Best Buy about a week ago saying that the IP address used to order a $1000 laptop was my IP address. One of the tech nerds or perhaps IT people at Best Buy must have looked for information regarding the hacking of my Best Buy account. I'm in New York and someone using a Pennsylvania address hacked into my account and posed as me to order an expensive laptop for themselves. I wish that I would have gotten the laptop. It was a Microsoft Surface Laptop Go that was delivered to Bensalem, PA. I am not sure how this is possible unless my IP address was hacked. I looked at the file sent to me from the company and my public IP address matched exactly to mine when I do a Google Search "what is my IP address?". Looks like I may have to consult an attorney or somehow prove that I am not saying that I purchased something and that I am making a false claim. Another option I have is to dispute the charge. I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, educate me on what an IP address is. I know that websites can only have your public IP but not your private IP address. I did not know that someone can steal your public IP address and pose as a certain individual. I guess you can call this identity theft.

it has nothing to do with your ip address, more than likely it was an inside job (someone inside the company using your account or gave your info to someone they know maybe?). did you use a public wifi when using the account? that is a really big issue and where most users info can be stolen. notify the police.delete the account.

Just because some one knows your IP address does not give them access to your account.

You don't need an IP address to hack an account.

All you need is the User Name and Password.   There are provisions on web sites to reset a password if it is forgotten and this is the method hackers use.

Do you have a Facebook Account.  did you post your address and date of birth on your facebook.   that is where hackers get most of their info for hacking into accounts.

If you had a change made against you then contact your bank, cancel the Credit Card used with that account.  Contact the company where the purchase was made and tell them.

Contact the police and give them the information you have about the hacker.
