1. John Steinbeck. While the 20th century produced a number of incredible American authors, none was more skilled and perhaps represented his era better than John Steinbeck.

There is no "the greatest" and nobody needs the greatest. It would be difficult to find criteria. And then again, others might not care with any such criteria.

A very subjective thing. Could be Harold Robbins or Daniel Steel - their stuff flew off airport bookshop shelves, but it was not exactly great. So we would need to define what we mean by the term. Stephen King had a huge following. So did Agatha Christie. For me it would probably be someone like Daphne Du Maurier who was equally at home writing fiction as about Cornwall. Or Muriel Spark, highly original or E M Delafield, long since overlooked.
