Taxes, got to pay for the "free" stuff.
Not enough users to lower the infrastructure costs.

hmmm, i've had my cellphone for half a year, only thing i've paid is the 40 bucks a month for the number/service.
i don't pay for anything else, canada and usa is zero and text is free...
change your provider maybe

Not a lot of users to spread out the cost of a expensive and vast network. This necessitates having the industry being a oligopoly.

Vast distances, and low numbers of people. That, and Canadians are prepared to pay more, so we get charged more.

Oh, we'd all like to know that. So far, no one has been able to give us an explanation that we all believe. The usual reason given by those who sell cell phone service is that the relatively small population in a very large area makes it expensive to install infrastructure.
