Did Star Trek ripoff Star Wars?

Both have 'star' in the title, both are set in space, both have space battles, both have blonde-haired heroes, with snarky sidekicks, and pointy-eared wise aliens. It seems pretty blatant, where else could Trek have gotten its ideas from?

Star Wars ripped off Star Trek. Trek is more science-based, star wars are more cartoon-based.

Star Trek debuted more than a decade before Star Wars.  Star Wars isn't inspired by Star Trek at all.  It has it's origins in adventure and scifi movies and stories from the first half of the 20th century.  After he got some attention for his first film, THX 1138, Lucas was interested in doing a movie adaptation of Flash Gordon.  When he couldn't purchase the film rights he decided to make his own space opera movie in that vein based on old movie serials, Japanese adventure films, and mythology.

Star Trek was more based on older literature, as well as tv.  Roddenberry often sold it to the studios as "Wagon Train to the stars" after a western show which had featured a caravan which passed different towns, allowing for guest stars and new locales.  But he saw the show as having a higher purpose.  Like Gulliver's Travels, it would function on one level as a simple adventure tale, but on another as an allegory commenting on contemporary issues.  That's why the original series had them visit weird planets which were pseudo-allegories of Earth, or run in space hippies, or time travel to visit 1960s America.  Roddenberry was trying to push a message in amongst his adventure stories.

Star Trek is much older than Star Wars .. so .. NO.

The first episode of Star Trek was shown on TV on September 8th 1966.

The first Star Wars film (part 4 : A New Hope) was released on October 19th 1977.

    OK ..

It's true that the first Star Trek MOVIE was released in December 6th 1979 .. after Star Wars .. but the TV show came first !!
