And even if they were aliens, why the *(&% would they attack us in the first place?

There is nothing of value that could be obtained in massive quantity elsewhere in the solar system, and in a much accessible manner if you have space faring capability.

And even if aliens would want to attack Earth, they could easily do it from orbit, away from any means or retaliation.
