I definitely love animals. If I'm not loving animals, I'm loving my friends from other cultures. My best friend is an Egyptian Muslim, and some of my other good friends are Lebanese, Pakistani, and Turkish. I've been to Morocco, loved it, and plan on going to Egypt to visit my friend some time in the near future. I question everything and I love to study up on many different topics. I know bits and pieces of about a dozen different languages, and I'm working on full fluency one by one. I can read my numbers in Arabic and Sanskrit, and I spend my spare time reading holy books of various religions. I'm studying at Mercer to become a veterinarian, but as I plan on settling out of the country (maybe the Middle East) some day, I should probably wisely change my concentration to human medicine before I get to grad school. Sadly, my school isn't big on foreign cultures, so I must satisfy myself by doing self-research, scaring my family by donning a hijab, and wearing sarees on the weekend.

  • Is there a wrist strap heart rate monitor compatible with the Garmin watches?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 405cx, and although the chest strap that comes with it is certainly accurate, as a female it is very uncomfortable to wear the strap without my chest getting in the way. I know that Garmin makes Fitbit-type watches which also track your heart rate, but the Forerunner requires an external heart rate device. I have been unable to find a Garmin heart rate monitor that is anything except a chest strap. Is the Forerunner compatible with other brands of wrist straps?

  • Could a cold lead to a nose bleed in my dog?

Yesterday my dog developed a nose bleed, which I know is unusual and often dangerous in dogs. She was not hemorrhaging buckets of blood, but we were still concerned. I took her to the emergency vet and after an exam and a few blood tests, we were able to determine that there isn't evidence of a foreign body in her nose, she hasn't had exposure to warfarin-like chemicals, and she does not exhibit any other signs of worrisome illness. Her platelets are low and she is slightly anemic, but the vet says that this could be due to a recent nose bleed. One thing he noted is that her white blood cell count was high, which he says could be indicative of an infection or a lymphoma/leukemia. Her breathing and heart rate are normal, and palpation of her lymph nodes revealed no swelling. She does not have bruises and does not bleed worrisomely easily.

Until her bloodwork comes back to test for lymphoma/leukemia, the veterinarian has tentatively put her on a round of antibiotics in the hopes that her WBC count is high due to an infection. I am hoping that it turns out to be something mild. She has a history of allergies because she is not from the country where we now reside, and I worry that these could have led to a bloody nose; she sneezes sometimes when we take her outside and responds well to children's Benadryl. I worry that she may even have a cold.

My question is this... obviously we are going as far as we can diagnostically and are doing the responsible thing by having her tested for lymphoma/leukemia and by running her on antibiotics on the off-chance that it is an infection, but it is a realistic guess to say that a cold or allergies could cause a bloody nose in a dog? She is otherwise 100% normal and has had no change in her appetite, stools, energy, eyes, nasal discharge, behavior, etc.

  • Do cyber bullying laws apply across state lines?

If someone in Texas bullies someone in Florida by posting mocking pictures, do cyber bullying laws apply? The pictures are not pornographic; they are freely available pictures that the person has posted online.

  • How can I hook up my computer to my television?

That's actually a bad question. I have the cable and it works fine. It's just that I seem to remember once figuring out how to hook up the computer to the TV, get the TV to display one program (the media player), while allowing my laptop screen to display something else. Like dual monitors. I can't remember how to do that any more. Ideas?

  • Passing out, epilepsy runs in the family...?

When I was a senior in high school, for about a week I had these fainting fits. I would feel a wave of nausea (but never actually vomit), feel very feverish, black out, and wake up on the floor in a cold sweat with a whanging headache. Nobody ever witnessed this, so I don't know how long I was out or what I did while on the floor. The doctors tested my blood sugar and iron and they told me everything was normal. They couldn't explain it. After a week, the episodes disappeared and I never thought about them again.

It's been four years. Right now I live in Thailand and don't have ready access to technologically advanced hospitals, so when I passed out this morning I freaked out. Today I have passed out at least six times in the exact same manner. The local clinic tested my blood sugar and said it was 126. They say that my blood pressure is perfectly normal.

I have no idea what's going on. I eat healthy, I feel healthy, and evidently I am healthy. I know that my paternal grandmother had epilepsy, and this does sound a bit like epilepsy from what I know of it. Any idea what it might be, so that I can give suggestions to the doctors here when I manage to find one...?

  • Why would anyone put GLUCOSE in a toothpaste?

I started using Biotene products a few weeks ago after rave reviews, but then I started actually reading the tube of toothpaste. Not only can I not find an ADA label on it, but in the ingredients list it has glucose. Am I missing something here? I've since gone on a hiatus from the Biotene toothpaste because this does not make sense to me. Can somebody explain why there is glucose in a toothpaste, and whether or not I have wasted my money?

  • What's the closest Buddhist temple to Georgetown in Washington, D.C.?

I don't get much of an opportunity to visit them where I live, but I will be staying at Georgetown University in DC in a few weeks and would like the opportunity to attend one. I know of at least six in DC, but I'm not entirely sure where they are or what their distance is in relation to Georgetown.

  • There's a company that offers a "border-crossing experience" for the Mexico-US border, what is it called?

I was having a conversation with a Hispanic friend about immigration and I mentioned this company. I heard about it years ago but I can't remember the name of it. It's a multi-day experience that has people sleeping under the stars, swimming across the border, cutting through fences, etc. It's an entirely fake experience for legal citizens who are curious what the border-crossing experience is like. I can't say I exactly approve of what the company does, but it bugs me that I don't remember the name.

  • My cat has a cold and should be giving birth within the next 24 hours or so; should I be worried?

This is her second litter of kittens and she's a very good mother. She didn't have any problems at all with her last birth and passed seven kittens in two hours. The birth itself is not what I am worried about. But she's been sneezing for the past two days, ever since she was around a friend of mine who was sick. I'm worried that she could give her cold to her kittens, and I've never had an animal so young or so small be exposed to such an illness.

Should I be worried? How dangerous is it for the kittens to be around her if she's ill? Hand-feeding the kittens is not an issue if it comes down to that, but it's very important for them to get the colostrum and it is this exposure that worries me; she groomed her last litter the most during the time when she was producing colostrum. Our veterinarian is not open tomorrow and will not open until Monday morning, but I know these kittens are coming very soon. She has yet to drop her mucous plug, but every other sign is there. She's even lactating already.

How should I handle this birth differently from her last?

  • Can someone translate a phrase into Mandarin for me...?

"I am a stupid American and I will buy anything."

  • Is it safe to allow one cat to adopt a runt from another litter that is a week younger?

Somehow, my two cats got pregnant. I don't want people to get angry with me about not spaying my cats; they were indoor cats and happened to rip a hole in the window screen, but at least now we're being responsible with the kittens.

One cat gave birth on July 8 to four kittens. They've really blossomed well because they have two nipples apiece. The other cat gave birth on July 13 to an astonishing seven kittens (they would all have survived if she hadn't accidentally slept on one).

At first, it was pretty easy for the second mother to feed all of her kittens, but now that their eyes are open and they're capable of walking some, she's having more difficulty feeding all six. Their two favorite nipples, her bottom two, are starting to get a little raw. I'd imagine this is very uncomfortable for her. At first she separated her litter into two groups of three and would feed each separately, but lately I've seen her isolating a single one from the other five, which happens to be slightly smaller than the rest. I don't know if she's singling it out because it's small or if it's small because she's singling it out.

I introduced the small kitten to the other mother, and she seems willing to accept it. She was bathing it just like she does her own. I've been wanting to give it to her and relieve some of the strain on its mother, but I'm worried about how it might interact with its adopted siblings. They're only five days older, but they're already to the point where they wrestle (gently) and don't always sleep all day, whereas this younger kitten mostly sleeps.

Would it be safe to introduce the kitten into that environment, or should I leave it with its mother and hope for the best? Or even, would it be better just to hand-feed it, considering that it's had its fair share of colostrum?

  • What makes the Earth unique among the planets of the Universe?

I mean, like the fact that a slight reduction or increase in the size of the Earth would drastically alter our gravitational and magnetic fields, completely changing and even possibly eliminating the possibility of life on Earth. Why is the Earth lucky to be the size it is, the distance from the Sun it is, etc.?

  • Single dental implant vs. implanted bridge...?

I've had a lot of work on my mouth, and to fully set up the scenario I need to describe two work areas in my mouth.

Area 1: An upper incisor. Has had surgery to remove gum overgrowth twice, has been chipped and patched (patched twice), has had a root canal, two temporary crowns, and one permanent crown. One root canal was post-crown. In a car accident it was mildly chipped, but this is not an issue as it is barely noticeable and the chip does not extend to what's left of the tooth. I've been told it may, MAY possibly eventually need a third and final root canal.

Area 2: Lower teeth directly under the incisor in question. The aforementioned car accident knocked out the tooth directly under the crown. At the time, I was not informed that a dental implant was a possibility and was given a bridge. I do not like the feeling of the bridge and have been told it may eventually need fillings where the root is slightly exposed at the front.

The tooth that has had the crown I want to eventually pull and have an implant put in because it's had such extensive work that I really am frustrated with it and would like to get it over with. The bridged teeth I would like to pull as well; I don't want to go through the hassle of having two crowns, so I would like the entire device pulled and have a bridge implanted.

I know that, as far as restorative procedures go, implants are the best option, and I know what the procedure, costs, and fail / success rates are. Knowing that insurance will likely cover very little or no cost of the procedure, I can afford to do one at a time (and, cosmetically, I would only want to do one at a time). I will be able to afford to get the second procedure, but in perhaps two or three years.

My question is this: which do you recommend I replace first: the tooth that has had exhaustive work done but is more or less stable, or the teeth that have not had very much work done, but that my dentist called attention to in order to "watch and observe the progress of?"

  • Where can I find an mp3 of "Sick Life" by Psycho MC and Kwokkin?

I've been looking for it everywhere! As someone who has a good command of French and is dating a Cantonese guy, I find the combination of the two languages fascinating because each of us only understands half! Here's a link if you don't know what I'm talking about:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Ikz204-J8

I really love both French and Chinese music (Mandarin and Cantonese), and although I have access to a lot of French music, I have almost no access to Chinese or other Oriental-language songs.

The link to download the song given in the description of the video you can watch on that link does not work, and I cannot find the song anywhere else. Please help, I really like this song!

  • What is a good website where I can buy books and textbooks in French?

I am attempting to become as fluent in French as possible, and I feel that one of the best ways to do this (other than speaking with natives) is to take subjects that I am studying in college and study them in French as well so that I can relate the ideas.

I'm currently studying biology, chemistry, and other things relating to medicine, and these things are important to me to learn in French as well because I plan on joining Doctors Without Borders some day (they're a mainly French organization that works in a lot of countries where French is the only language spoken by the poor).

Although it is important and I would love for people to be able to tell me where I can get hold of books on biology, chemistry, and anatomy, I'm looking for books on other subjects as well, like history and literature (I'm taking several minors). I've tried looking on Amazon and the only thing I can really find is translations of some literary works I've been reading, like Machiavelli, Chaucer, and Homer. These are great, but I'm looking for broader subjects, and in the French language Amazon just does not have a lot of variety beyond literature.

So please, I'm looking for a website where I can find French books on everything from Fitzgerald to ancient Egyptian dynasties to biology and organic chemistry.

  • Who are some good pop / hip-hop musicians in the Oriental languages?

I've recently been introduced to a lot of Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Japanese, and Thai music, but as I go mainly for Arabic and Hindi music myself, I have no idea who I might pursue.

I'm actually a really big fan of rock, but I don't expect anyone here to be able to tell me where to find Chinese or Japanese rock, although I would love if someone were able to point me in that direction.

I don't mind pop and hip-hop, and the music I have been introduced to is fantastic, but I have no idea who it is. Help...?

  • Who first coined the phrase "Bollywood?"?

I think it would be an interesting bit of trivia for my Bollywood Film Commission on campus, as our goal is (literally) to educate white people on the wonders of Hindustani cinema and culture. I believe I am the only non-Desi on my college campus who knows the difference between Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, you get the picture.

My college campus is a cultural vacuum, and I think if I could find out who is responsible for Bollywood being called Bollywood, they'd enjoy the trivia. They went nuts over the Bombay / Mumbai / Bollywood trio, lol, and as I teach them more and more Hindi words, it's interesting for them to get the background on where certain words come from.

  • Why do ferrets lose their hair when they develop some cancers?

I know some idiot is going to try to post an answer about chemotherapy, but to that idiot: ferrets lose their hair anyway.

In my experience, insulinomas (cancers of the beta-cells of the pancreas) and adrenal tumors cause ferrets to lose their hair. Insulinomas seem to cause hair loss much faster than adrenal tumors, and when adrenal tumors are removed, hair loss appears to stop and often hair grows back. Hair loss almost always starts at the base of the tail and near the navel.

I asked a professor why this is so, and she speculated it was a dietary thing. Insulinomas affect the production of insulin, and adrenal tumors affect the production of adrenaline and noradrenaline (obviously). She went into detail about how the effect on adrenaline / noradrenaline had an effect on the growth of of cells that are quickly replaced, like the lining of the stomach, and thought it might have also affect other rapidly reproduced cells, like those in the hair follicles. She speculated that insulinomas may also have some sort of dietary effect, but she said she could not be sure about either case as she had never studied it.

I have never heard of another animal that has such high incidents of cancer (some studies suggest ferrets are given a 50% chance from birth of dying from cancers), and I have never heard of another animal that develops hair loss when cancer develops, without the influence of chemotherapy.

Why is this so, why do ferrets lose their hair?

  • What are some good, English-speaking medical schools in India?

I really don't care what part of India, to be honest, so feel free to give me examples from the Punjab to Kerala and beyond.

I've been looking at going to medical school in India, and I know there are some very good schools there, but the trouble is that my Hindi is not good enough to warrant a Hindi-speaking medical school (my Punjabi is slightly better, but still not good enough for medical school), and I do not know which schools there would teach solely in English. Undoubtedly my language skills would improve the longer I was there, but considering that I can't read more than a few words of Hindi... I think it's best I just stick with an English-speaking school.
