Hi there.

I'm writing from Italy, where I currently live. Since I normally spend only a few weeks a year in the US, I've always been more than comfortable with my TracFone. I use my Italian phone for the internet, and the TracFone number for the US.

Now though, I'll be spending almost six months stateside, so I'm not sure whether TracFone is still the best choice or I should switch to another carrier instead.

Of course I don't want to sign a contract, staying there only for 6 months. I'd like to pay monthly, and have internet included (that's what I actually need the most). Besides, I don't want to lose my number.

Any suggestions?

Nonna emigrò negli Stati Uniti con la sua famiglia agli inizi dello scorso secolo, credo tra il 1906 ed il 1910, e tutti i suoi studi furono conseguiti negli States. Ritornò in Italia all'incirca nel 1925. Dato che agli inizi del secolo non era difficile come oggi, credo sia probabile che il mio bisnonno abbia richiesto ed ottenuto per lei la cittadinanza americana, ma io non ne sono certa ed i miei due zii ancora in vita non hanno saputo rispondermi. Il punto è che, se mia nonna avesse avuto la doppia cittadinanza, volendomi io trasferire negli States mi risulterebbe tutto molto più facile. Ho infatti visto che avrei diritto a richiedere la cittadinanza in quanto diretta discendente. Ora, l'idea che questa possibilità esista ed il non poterlo scoprire mi sta facendo diventare matta!!!

Aiuti, suggerimenti? Quanlunque cosa vi venga in mente, vi prego...

It was taken from a magazine. Yesterday my English teacher asked me to choice an article, read it and then make a summary. But when I read “and this helps explains why” I was a bit perplexed... Is it a mistake or maybe I'm not able to catch the construction of this phrase?

In my opinion, it should be “and this helps to explain” or “and this explains”. Am I wrong?

Qualche giorno fa, ho tentato di inviare ad un mio amico un pacco contenente alimenti, ma anche vini e liquori. Il pacco è stato bloccato a Roma perché, dall'undici settembre, pare non sia più possibile spedire alcun liquido e comunque non alcolici, verso alcuno stato degli USA a meno di non mandarli a qualcuno con licenza di vendere alcol. Ho sentito che si può via nave, ma non ho trovato nulla in rete. Così, nel frattempo, mi farò spedire il pacco a casa mia, in attesa di capire come fare ad inviarlo al mio amico. Dovrei mandare una ricetta ad un mio amico che vive negli Stati Uniti, ma mi è stato fatto notare che non riuscirà a capire a quanto corrispondono litri, grammi, ecc...

Non ditemi di utilizzare come unità di misura tazze e cucchiai, perché proprio non sarei in grado di fare una conversione.

Pensavo di usare once e libbre per il peso, ma per litri e millilitri cosa posso usare? Le pinte??? Mi suona un po' strano...

Pumpkin Risotto

Serves 4

1 liter hot vegetable stock

300/400g pumpkin

100g butter

1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped

150ml dry white wine

400g rice

100g freshly grated Parmesan cheese

freshly ground black pepper

Heat the stock.

Clean the pumpkin, remove seeds, cut into slices, peel and then cut into cubes. Cook it into the boiling vegetable stock for about 10 minutes.

Drain the cooked pumpkin and liquidize it into a mixer.

In a separate pan heat the butter and add the onion; fry very slowly for about 10 minutes without colouring. When the onion have softened, add the rice and turn up the heat.

The rice will now begin to lightly fry, so keep stirring it. After a minute it will look slightly translucent. Add the wine and keep stirring.

Once the wine has cooked into the rice, add the pumpkin and turn down the heat to a simmer so the rice doesn’t cook too quickly on the outside. Keep adding ladlefuls of stock, stirring and almost massaging the creamy starch out of the rice, allowing each ladleful to be absorbed before adding the next. This will take around 15 minutes. Taste the rice — is it cooked? Carry on adding stock until the rice is soft but with a slight bite. If you run out of stock before the rice is cooked, add some boiling water.

Remove from the heat and add the butter and Parmesan. Stir well. Place a lid on the pan and allow to sit for 2 minutes. This is the most important part of making the perfect risotto, as this is when it becomes creamy and oozy like it should be. Add some freshly ground black pepper and eat it as soon as possible.

Vorrei dire ad una persona di lingua Inglese che mi ha appena scritto una cosa moooolto "eccitante", qualcosa che possa corrispondere al nostro "ok... adesso ho bisogno di una doccia gelata, magari anche di due..." o qualcosa del genere... Cosa dicono loro, in questi casi? Aiuuutoo!!!!

Provo a spiegarmi meglio. Alle volte io e una mia collega di lavoro, quando siamo entrambe un po' assenti, e dobbiamo fare qualcosa che richieda attenzione, cerchiamo sempre di supportarci a vicenda, facendola insieme. Quello che diciamo in questi casi è proprio "oggi di due ne facciamo una buona". O anche qualcosa che richieda una particolare conoscenza, che non è sufficiente se presa da una singola persona, ma che può completarsi e diventare efficace se si uniscono i due "saperi".

Esiste un modo in Inglese di dire questo?
