  • how do you ask a question on Answers?

No this is not the joke trick question.

I'd like to know if YOU personally ask in a hurry (and leave out half the details)? or work it out neatly, with good spelling, all the details needed? or post txttwk from your phone?

bq: how many Qs do you ask a day, on average?

  • Do cats fade with age?

I've mostly always had grey tabby cats, and, well, they're always grey.

But now I have a black cat and his colour seems to be fading (he is 7 going on 8). On his chest (where a lot of cats are white) he seems to have turned a lovely deep auburn colour. Can this be from age? something in his diet?

  • Excel help - how to vary the length of an autofill?

I hope there's an Excel expert around to help me with this.

I have a spreadsheet where I have a recorded macro doing various things. One of them is to copy or autofill a formula to column C.

The problem is, the data might vary day to day between 2000 items or 40,000. Autofilling 40,000 formulas each time is a big waste of resources and takes ages to do.

How can I make the macro find how many rows of data there are in Col A, and autofill just the appropriate number of rows?

  • What camera will take an old Minolta lens?

I've been given a Minolta zoom lens (don't know a lot about it).

I have heard Sony bought Minolta some years ago, so maybe some Sony cameras would use the same fittings as Minolta. So would a Minolta lens fit a Sony camera? or some other brand? and if so, any particular model?

  • My carpet got flooded. What's the best way to save it?

My washing machine (in the bathroom) blew off the water hose when I wasn't home. Water came out and flooded my bedroom carpet (fitted) about an inch deep.

So far I have brushed a lot of the water back into the bathroom, with a broom. A friend is arriving shortly with a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, to suck up the water that's already soaked in. We are planning to "squeegee" the carpet with a piece of wood ahead of the vacuum, for force out more water for it to suck up.

What next? how can I dry out the carpet without having to pull it up? how long would it take to dry? (it's a flat pile synthetic carpet).

  • Why don't the athletes march at the closing of an Olympic games?

At the opening, all the athletes march in their national groups. I think the host country comes first and the rest alphabetically?

But at the closing ceremony they just wander in and stroll around in mixed groups. Why is this? has it always been like this?

I was just watching the closing of the Vancouver games. A lot of them even have cameras with them and are taking their own souvenir snapshots.

  • Is anyone getting "Coding error" problems with Google search?

Starting an hour ago, if I type in a search into Google, it comes up ok. But if I make any change to the search term, all I get is a blank screen with a dialog box saying

    "Content Encoding Error

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression." (Firefox)

or a complicated message giving HTML-looking details but with the same basic outcome, that it's an encoding error (Safari).

I have no other symptoms of a possible virus on my machine, and have been only on Yahoo lately. If it's a Google problem then I don't need to scan my PC.

So, is anyone else getting this?

  • How can I clean up sticky sugar syrup from my stove?

Trying to cook toffee, the pan got knocked and a lot of half syrup half toffee got spilled, and went everywhere. It is not hard enough to scrape up. But it is too sticky and thick to wash off with a wet sponge.

What would be a good chemical to use, to get it off? especially in the grooves around the hotplates?

  • How can I catch a mouse in my kitchen?

For 3 days I've heard a scratching noise from the cupboard under my kitchen sink. It sounds very much like it might be a mouse.

If I open the cupboard and it jumps out, it will hide somewhere else and I won't be able to catch it to put it out.

So how can I catch it?

Alternatively, how do I persuade my cat to sit and wait for it while I open the cupboard?

The sink is against a wall backing on to a shared storage room. From memory (I"m not going to look now) there is only a tiny gap where the drain pipe goes down. SO I don't even know how it might have gotten in there. Any clues?

  • Does the Yahoo Snowman make a good Christmas card?

It's a make-your-own snowman you can send as an email or add to Twitter.

  • How can I stop drinking chocolate from being lumpy?

Every time I try to mix drinking chocolate or Sustagen powder into milk, it comes out lumpy, no matter how hard I stir it. Fluffy frothy bits float on top and won't ever dissolve. Is there some trick to getting a smooth drink out of these powders? (I prefer cold milk).

  • How often do horses need to be shoed?

All I know about horse shoes is they are lucky. But I met someone who has a share in a race horse. They get billed every month for shoeing, even when the horse is not in work. Is this normal?
