  • do some people find experimental music to be beautiful?

I don't mean pieces that are experimental as in make music that is not accepted in their time to be normal or good, I don't fume every time music is written for an instrument rather than a group of voices like JJ fux or anything. I mean pieces like 4'33 or aleatoric music, white on white paintings etc, that type of thing.

Personally this is the only type of classical music that I can't find it in my heart to respect or like. I perfectly well understand the philosphical concepts behind the pieces, and I even believe that these compositions are to some degree necessary in that they expand the boundaries of music etc.

However, that said I simply don't find the music to be interesting or beautiful, and I don't find the ideas which are essentially that music/beauty can't be defined/that beauty is in the eye of the beholder to be genius or even new to any degree. It seems to me as if the music of this type has the sole purpose of being different for the sake of being different(the more different a work is the more genius it must be the composers seem to think) and that there is no attempt at beauty or meaning.

So, I was wondering if anyone actually regularly listens to aleatoric music and other experimentalist music, and if you do, why do you enjoy it? I really am not trying to insult anyone and am just curious.

  • info on johanna senfter?

does anyone know much about her, she was apparently a student of max reger and followed in his foot steps to some degree. She wrote 9 symphonies and a good number of concertos, but I can't really find any recordings or sheet music. My curiosity has been greatly stirred and I was hoping someone had looked into her and done some of the work for me. =)

  • very difficult virus?

Every once in awhile while i am browsing the internet a java run, save, or cancel pop up comes up with a file called "init.jnlp" and shortly after a fake exploitation virus scanning program comes up. There has been different kinds of the program afterwards, obviously i just ctrl alt dlt and stop the process and delete the file, and I have rebooted in safe mode and gotten rid of what i thought was everything( scanning with free versions of AVG, malwarebytes antimalware, superantispyware, and spybot S&D. However everytime i think that it is gone, a day or so later this Init.jnlp pop up comes up again, of course i just click cancel and then get rid of the virus program quickly but it is still annoying as hell.

has some info about it but i really don't know what to do to delete it.

  • greatest contrapuntal masters?

some that i think could perhaps be considered

    JS Bach(of course)

    Max Reger

    Sergei Taneyev

Of course all composers are to some degree learned in counterpoint(as far as i know) but I mean people who are specifically noted for their tendencies for fugues or counterpoint.

  • how do you label a triad if it starts on a note not in it's scale(with roman numerals)?

for instance if you are in the key of e minor, how would you label the triad d sharp f sharp and A natural? Would you just label it a diminished 7th (vii*)? since the # sign for d is in the music would it just be assumed that the 7th is in that case starting on d#?

That would make sense to me, but it's always best to be sure i suppose, anyway thanks for the help.

  • a question about intervals?

i was a bit confused by this, in a music theory book in a chapter on intervals i saw that they considered just 1 note an interval, or a prime interval i think it was called. I was wondering what notes you are on if it is diminished or double diminished? or if it is possible to diminish it?

    anyway thanks for the help,

  • what is the best strategy book for a class A chess player?

hi, i have been playing chess about 3 years, i am about 1900 uscf, i think i should read a strategy book as my knowledge in that area is pretty insufficient, i have been looking at pachman's unabridged modern chess strategy, silmans books (amateurs mind, reassess books), watsons modern chess strategy, nunn's chess move by move, and a couple of books by euwe, but i am really totally indecisive as to which i should read first, i have read my system and a couple of game collection/biography books but that is all.

Anyway, if you have a different suggestion that would be nice too, thanks for taking the time to answer.

  • when transcribing works from harpsichord to piano?

why do editors add dynamic markings such as pedal and forte/piano etc when they were not originally played/written that way, and is there any reason to follow these markings if they were just the choice of the editor and not the composer?

  • who do you think the most talented "bach's" are besides JS bach and his sons?

  • what do you think of beethoven's choices for favorite composers.?

I recall a quote in which beethoven claimed the best composer ever was handel, and that his favorite contemporary was cherubini, to me these both seem like odd choices, and i would like others opinion on this, thank you.
