  • How much mass does the solar wind add to the earth in a year?

With streams of protons from the sun being pulled in at the poles by earth's magnetic field, I was just wondering how much mass that would add to the earth in a year?

  • How do we know that everything with mass has gravity?

What experimental evidence is there for this? I am asking cos I had the idea that the attractive force of gravity could come mainly from the iron core of a planet. Maybe it's stronger than we think and it is a property of metals in a similar way to magnetism (even though it attracts everything).

Gravity is supposed to be reduced as you get closer to the centre of the earth due to an increasing percentage of mass being above you rather than below, but is there experimental evidence of this? One way to maybe test this would be to see if a 1kg weight weighs more or less in a submarine at sea level compared to at a deep ocean floor.

I've done plenty of googling but couldn't find anything.

  • Poll: Should we be able to rate questions?

I reckon we should and if a question gets a lot more thumbs down than up, the question poster should lose the ability to pick best answer for that question. This would prevent users posting biased and illogical questions and picking the one answer that agrees with them.

  • The "sport" of race-walking. Is this a joke or what?

Just caught some race-walking from the world athletics championships in Daegu. They are always meant to have one foot on the ground, yet the cameras are constantly catching people out but the stewards rarely catch them (they only judge by eye). The guy who is leading has had his feet off the ground at least 3 times now meaning he should be disqualified now but isn't.

This sport is a joke. They might as well replace it with the egg and spoon race. At least they could judge that correctly!

So, what do you guys think? :-)

  • Does anyone else find the Y!A spell checker annoying and useless?

Whenever I type anything, I seem to get a load of errors according to the checker due to it not recognising dont arent didnt, etc, without the apostrophes. I have leant to ignore it cause of this. If it accepted those words I might actually use the damn thing. </rant> :-)
