4 AnswersSecurity10 years agoHow widespread is defying the law and smoking in cafes in The Netherlands.......?
As a very frequent visitor in NL I have often visited cafes and found the customers smoking as normal and ash trays on the tables. This I have just put down to the fact that the landlord (kastelijn) was present at all times. However last weekend I visited three cafes, and in two of them different staff went behind the bar.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I asked about the law. I was told that the kastelijn thing no longer applies, and everyone just ignored the no smoking law anyway. In each of the cafes was a 'rookpot €1' , which i assumed was to pay any fines accrued.
I must add the cafes I visited (two of them city centre pubs) were not 'passing trade' places, but were frequented by what I would only call regulars.
Please don't get me wrong, this is in no way a complaint, and it certainly won't stop me visiting these same excellent friendly hostelries again. (and again :o)

7 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoHow can beers and lagers be called by their national names when brewed in another country?
I have been out this afternoon to stock up with a few drinks for the New Year, and for a change I bought Bu*wei*er, only to find that this along with Dutch (except He*n*k*n) Belgian, Australian etc. are all brewed in the U.K.
Over the years I have visited quite a few breweries in the U.K.. and when it comes to 'Any questions?' there are two main ones.
First one usually is "Why is the beer better here than in the pub"? Usual answer simply "It shouldn't be". Second question is "What gives beers and lagers different tastes, if the same ingredients are used"? Usual answer "Our own well water".
Anyone who has had, for instance, Gr*ls*h in The Netherlands, or Ste**a A*to*s in Belgium can instantly tell the difference, so how can they be given the same name?
6 AnswersBeer, Wine & Spirits1 decade agoIf you get a bit time, can you see if you can make me a website?
This was how I was greeted by a friend this evening. Stipulation was it had to be cheap. (I think he means free).
I know there are web building sites available, but I really have no idea where to start. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know if it will make a difference, but it would be for a business.
Thanks!

3 AnswersOther - Computers1 decade agoCombi failure. No hot water or C.H. ................?
Combi sounds as though it wants to start up (ignite), but it's on - off, on - off, on - off all the time when tap is opened. Any advice, or hint, would be greatly appreciated.
Last thing I want is a plumber turning up, shaking his head and 'tut tutting' :o)
Thanks

7 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade ago'Mushrooms' in the Netherlands. I have just heard tonight.....?
that after a post mortem on someone who's death was supposedly caused by the use of mushrooms, thereby bringing in the banning of the sale last Dec., it has now been proved that the death was not caused by the use of this drug. Following the finding it is now proposed that the new law be rescinded, and the sale of 'mushrooms' will again be allowed.
I'm not really sure as to whether to believe this or not, as, to me it raises questions about the ability of the Netherlands legal system to basically 'make it's mind up'

does there seem to be a disproportionate number of questions about Belgium lately? Could this be a clever move by the Belgian Tourist Board? :o)
