I highly encourage training an Australian Shepherd because they are very smart dogs. Training directs them...in fact if you don't train this dog (and exercise it a lot) they can become very destructive.
What I do not recommend is protection training. Australian Shepherds are naturally protective dogs, just leave it at that. Protection training can cause your dog to become extremely aggressive even with friends, and you don't want to risk a law suit. It is something best left to experts and not something you want to take a risk with.
As for language- See, the dog does not know whether you are speaking English, Dutch or German. Whether you say "sit" in English, Japanese or Martian, your dog knows he is supposed to sit, because you show him how to and reward him when he does. You can teach him to sit with the word "fart" if you wanted to. Your english is great, so I recommend a book like "Good Owners, Great Dogs", "Rover, Don't Roll Over" or the like for basic training. Just substitute the english words for words in language of your choice.

Aussies are great dogs. Buy a book from a pet store, or do a little research on the web.
