If the baby is almost entirely breastfed, it may not be constipation. It is normal for a fully breastfed baby who is at least 6 weeks old to not have a bowel movement for several days (up to 2 weeks or occasionally longer). As long as it's soft and immense when it arrives, it is *not* constipation. Treating it in *any* way could harm your baby.

There are sepository laxitives you can get at the store. I haven't used them on my daughter, but my niece who is a year now had to use them for probably the last 6-7 months so I'm sure they are safe. Before I would do that, though, give him a bottle a day of just water. Also cut out some rice cereal because it constipates. I would switch to baby oatmeal. Is putting it in the bottle what the doctor said to do? I know a lot of people say its a choking hazard which is not what I'm getting at. The formula is pumped full of all the nutrients and can cause constitution on its own. Then the cereal soaks up all the water in the formula. its like drinking down the powdered formula when you think of it. Try spoon feeding the cereal mixed with water 1/2hr-45min before the bottle. When you spoon feed the cereal, give water to drink. I can't eat my dinner with nothing to drink. Giving water at this age will help with stooling and you might get an extra wet diaper or two but will also teach baby to drink water when thirsty which will help you when they are a toddler and all they want is sugary stuff. You can give a 6month old Apple juice in 1-2oz portions 1-2 times a day. It WILL give gas. Get some baby mylicon. No more than 4oz per day and only until pooping problem is solved. I would make this my last resort, even after the sepositories. It's an act of respiration really. The gas just isn't worth it. Good luck. I really feel that switching the cereal and routine for cereal will work. Please let us know.

It's disgusting, but put some Vaseline on a Q-tip, and insert it. It should relax the muscles and make the constipation go away. Just insert the tip, don't go too deep... Also may want to move out of the way, because sometimes it works too quickly.

However, keep in mind, it's only been two days, and babies around this age start to regulate more, and this might not be a big deal until tomorrow or Saturday.

By the way, you really shouldn't give a baby of 7 weeks apple juice or anything. This is an old remedy, but they don't really recommend juice for babies that age.

When u feed her the bottle add a little more nursery water to the mixture-about 50/50. This will also make her hungry sooner than usual. If she is constipated this will definitely help. Also since u breastfeed watch what u eat. The baby is getting the same nutritional value just as if u were still pregnant.

I had a friend who put a teaspoon of prune juice in the baby's bottle, but I would consult a pediatrician first. Can the baby tolerate apple juice, I still use that for my daughters constipation. Maybe dilute some apple juice with water and that will help.

Don't do any of these suggestions without calling your child's doctor. While most docs will probably tell you to use dark karo syrup at this age, you need to check it with your doc. Giving a 7 wk old baby anything but formula and/or breastmilk can trigger allergic reactions. Or your baby may not be able to digest things yet. And your doctor needs to check your baby to see why she's constipated. Very rarely, that can be a sign that something is wrong with their digestive tract.

I wouldn't give a her anything extra by mouth. You could try a warm bath or gently inserting a lubricated q-tip into the rectum to give her an urge to push, worse comes to worse they make infant suppositories too. But if it's only been a couple days and she's still eating and peeing and doesn't seem to uncomfortable, I would wait another day before doing anything.

My daughter went through the same thing when she was a baby, I think it was the combination breast milk and formula, who knows. But she did go 5-6 days without a bowel movement before we tried a suppository...they work great and quick, just a warning!

    Good Luck!

This is an old grandma's remedy but it worked. If you put a few drops (i mean small drops) of Karo syrup in the milk it will help. I did that like every 2 bottles and it helped. If you don't want to do that you can get welch's grape juice mix it with water so it won't be so strong and that helped my kids.

Babies can sometimes do that, it could be nothing. You could try a little apple juice mixed with Nursery water if your Dr. gives the OK...7 weeks really is too early for juice, but if it's just used to help her poo the Dr. may allow it.
