Lost my job. What to do? How to react?

I started an admittedly, rather rubbish job at an amusement arcade a week ago, and this afternoon, I was called and said that they had to 'let me go' because of 'staff changes.' (What makes me laugh is that this company has already brought in new staff, including myself) I don't know of anything I've done wrong, and in fact, I was praised by my superior on Friday for my cleaning abilities in both the kitchen and the toilets. I don't mind leaving this job, but I obviously have to work the week out. I am absolutely furious with the woman who called me with this news, and I know tomorrow, she's going to try and be all nice to me. I want a good reference, but I don't feel like treating this sad excuse for a human being with any kind of respect.

Also, any ideas of why I have REALLY lost my job? I am 23 and just got out of university. My supervisor has seen me looking through the job pages of the local paper. Could this be a reason? Should I actually ask her?

    don't worry about it hun. the reason to ME about how you lost your job is because you didn't like the job enough! you are going to find something SO much better than that stupid arcade job! give it time! don't stress about finding what you did wrong. vent with someone about how much this pisses you off, be it your husband, boyfrind, kid or ANYONE willing to listen! write about it! whatever will get it off your chest to help you get over it! if you want to ask your supervisor, sure. i wouldn't. PERSONALLY, i doubt she'll give you a truthful answer. start filling out appilcations for jobs for places whether they have a help wanted sign out there window or NOT.

    good luck finding something better! i know you can!

    Well first of all look at this layoff as a possible stepping stone to a new and exciting career. Secondly, get you resume together and post it on several jobs websites such as: dice.com, monster.com and any others that you can gather from a Internet search in your area. Thirdly, take your resume into any agency that is in your area. They'll more than likely test your skills and help you be placed in a job suitable for your talent skills. Fourthly, as much as you may not like it. Work the remaining week out with a smile on your face. In years from now; that reference may be the difference between landing that job or losing out. Don't worry about why you're losing your job. I've worked in HR, and their are many reasons that have nothing to do with you.

    I seriously doubt it was because you were looking through the job offers.

    There is nothing wrong in asking why they felt it was unnecessary to keep you. Ask things like how could I have done better to keep this job. What is it that you look for in an employee, etc.

    But, it sounds like it was a disreputable place anyway. It could have been very a petty reason. Get a job that will respect you, and you will go far. It seems like you have that thing called a work ethic.

    like many people above me already stated, you have nothing to lose, you are already 'let go', so I would just ask. There is one thing though that I don't understand.... Why do you have to finish out the week? You are good to help them out for the rest of the week until the finish thier "staff changes" hmm i think not. you have only been there a week. i would go in and ask what the reason was and tell her to find a replacement for you for the rest of the week, because you won't be in.

    I hate to say it, but thats just how Corporate America is. It's not designed to keep you. Take it as a learning experience and realize that there is no such thing as a good or secure job. Look into a filed that you enjoy and start a plan to eventually work for yourself. It's also the only way to ever control what earn...good luck

    Well, it sounds to me like you have nothing to lose by asking what the real reason was for your dismissal. You may want to mention to her that "staff changes" didn't sound like a valid reason. Also, tell her that you're really interested in knowing what happened because you'd hate to make the same mistake at another job, so it would be a good learning experience for you to find out what went wrong.

    Did this happen before you were let go??? If so, well then, that right there is your reason.

    If the supervisor started acting differently after they saw you looking in the ads, then that was a stupid reason to let you go.

    Best advice go put applications in various places. If you have a good work/ or academic backgroung then you should find one pretty quickly.

    BTW Staff changes is just a really nice term for your fired. Just so stupid for her to put it in those terms.

    If you were looking at jobs and she saw you, there is your reason.

    Ask her. You have nothing to lose. What are they going to do? Fire you? lol

    You can ask her to reconsider. Tell her you thought you were doing well and would like to know what went wrong so you don't do it again. The worst that can happen is that she says no. You won't be any worse off than you are now.

    It could be a reason, but the only way that you can really find out is if you just ask her.

    Ask her what is the really reason you wanted me to go?

    See what she says. If you are looking for another job would you like to work from home?
