Climate change ignorance?

How have we allowed so much confusion about climate change, as shown on this board?

Why do so many people link it to ozone depletion?

Poor education? Poor journalism? Vested interests?

Anyone posting to this board should first check www.ipcc.ch for independantly verified facts.

Climate change is happening. It is caused by humans.

It has nothing to do with ozone depletion.

It does not mean sunnier warmer weather (as implied by the term global warming)

    You say…

“Anyone posting to this board should first check www.ipcc.ch for independently(sic) verified facts.”

Sadly, the IPCC is anything but independently verified. In fact, anyone who disagrees with what’s in the reports is simply ignored. Have a look at this article about Aynsley Kellow… http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php?/site/artic...

    Here’s a quote…

“there is no chance of a chapter [of the IPCC report] ever being rejected for publication, no matter how flawed it might be.”

And this is the biggest problem with the whole global warming debate – people like you don’t *want* there to be a debate! You simply state: people are so ignorant! If you want the facts, read THIS! But the IPCC report is simply one version of the facts. There are plenty of people out there who disagree with the IPCC’s version.

And let’s face it, people like you were pointing to the IPCC’s 2001 report, saying “these are the *facts*”, yet now we find, for example, that man’s effect on temperature stated in the 2001 report was around 50% *higher* than in the current report.

    For reference:

IPCC TAR 2001 - http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/pdf/WG1_T... - see page 8 – affects of anthropogenic greenhouse gasses 2.43 Wm-2 (The other anthropogenic affects are broadly self cancelling.)

    IPCC FAR 2007 - http://www.ipcc.ch/SPM2feb07.pdf - see page 4 – Net anthropogenic warming stated as 1.6 Wm-2

So the situation is not as bad as we were lead to believe! The 2001 IPCC report *got it wrong!* But we’re supposed to accept that they’ve got it right *this* time, are we? You must be very naïve and/or gullible to blindly believe that. Who knows? Perhaps the next report will say “Panic over! There is no global warming.”

And contrary to what some have said here, there are many scientists who don’t believe that global warming is going to be a crisis. And no, they are not “all employed by the big oil companies.” Many more, previously “consensus” scientists are becoming sceptics every day – see, for example http://ff.org/centers/csspp/library/co2weekly/2007...

The only *real* truth about global warming is that the “jury is still out” on the subject. While it is true that we have been in the midst of a generally warming trend for the last few hundred years, there is *no conclusive evidence* that this warming trend is A) caused by us, or B) going to be a big problem.

Whilst I’m all for taking steps to make our lives more “green” (I myself have solar panels on my roof to heat my hot water (63°C today – woohoo!)) I see no reason for anybody to take drastic action, based on the incomplete and contradictory evidence we currently possess.

Have a read of my sources if you’d like some more information on this subject.

As ever with global warming – don’t believe the hype.

Just look at the answers above! Anyone reading the comments below would think that the scientific debate about anthropogenic climate change is wide open. It really annoys me when people on comments boards make specious claims like "the ice caps have been melting for the last 400,000 years". Says who? Where are you sources? All this does is confuse the issue for non-scientists. Most people simply don't have time or energy to study the research for themselves, so they simply listen to the people who are saying things that they want to hear.

This works both ways, of course, but the difference for denialists is that the science is overwhelmingly in support of ACC - no matter what your correspondents here would like to believe. You have to remember that there are some extremely rich and powerful companies out there who have a vested interest in ensuring that humanity continues to burn fossil fuels, come what may. Is it any wonder that ignorance and confusion abound when some of the biggest companies in the world are funding it?

    hello fred,

You answered my question and ask me about my expensive Subruban. Some people have really good jobs and i will have enough money to buy all the gas i want even if it goes to 10 bucks a gallon. When my big burd is old i will buy a new one. Humans are not causing global warming. You are a sheep and beleive all the propaganda you see/read.

Why is mars warming at the same pace we are? theres no oil and no humans. Most cardon dioxide comes from natural sources anyways. Why don't you go try to plug and volcano with you huge empty head to save the world for the rest of us.

There are also tons of other thing that hold more heat than cardon like nitrogen and water varpor should we stop evaporation? The truth is there is alot we don't know so chill out and take a road trip and live happy not scared.

Or they come from positions like mine where during the winter the temperature dips down into the -50's with the windchill and summer lasts only a few short months. No, I don't live in Alaska or Canada. It's kind of hard to believe in global warming when the temperatures during the winter get to the point where exposed skin can freeze in a matter of minutes.

Poor education, gullible individuals, and political agendas are to blame.

Half of the responses refer to Global Warming being "fake" because Al Gore says it's real... these people don't really understand global warming... they don't care. They just know that a liberal believes in it so they must oppose it.

The other answers cite already disproven sources with links to the oil industry or make wild claims about scientists wanting to organize to harm the world just to make money...

And the rest of those attacking the science behind global warming are wildly ignorant of the scientific method and the data that actually exists.

These aren't the braintrusts of the world... sadly, they're very loud and they create an echo-chamber where it's very easy for other, ignorant, logically inept people to be influenced by other ignorant, logically inept people.

Hence the existence of the right wing.

Well stated. I'd say that poor education and vested interests are the priamary culprits. The media havn't doen the best job in the world, but generally get the facts straight. But I'd also add the tendency of many people (in this case on the right) to substitute what they are fed as political ideology for facts.

Yeah, didn't they show that all the experts who denounced global warming were all employed by the big oil companies?

You referred to the IPCC report. Have you read the reports that the summary and the report itself were altered to agree with the policies that the UN wants to institute? THAT is not science, its politics. The fact is that there are parts of the scientific community that are basically whores. They want their money and will tell anyone what they want to hear so they can get it.

I would suggest you go here: http://www.junkscience.com/

And read some of the REAL science behind Global Warming.
