How hard is it to get a Marketing Job?

I have been working in the NHS as PA for a Head of Department, I couldn't take other jobs in the past due to personal reasons. I would like to get into the private industry, specially in Marketing, but have no work experience in that. The only Marketing knowledge I have is my BA in Marketing...

It's a tough one, even with the degree. Marketing is still a popular choice and, what's more, with both sexes (yes, there ARE still plenty of disciplines that are dominated by one gender or another!), thus the total number of potential competitors is high. I don't know what salary you're on at the moment but you might need to look at taking a mid-range job to get a foothold. In the industry, your track record is key, so the part you've played in successful campaigns, events, sales support, research etc is vital. That's how people progress, no-one goes in at the top!

Professional qualifications help (CIM or IDM) but these also only go so far, they would probably appear as a 'desirable' rather than an 'essential' in a person spec. Also consider the area of marketing you want to get into or specialise in. It's not all about ad campaigns or producing pretty flyers; there's also research, planning and analysis as just a few examples of other areas. There's plenty to choose from.

And lastly, talk to agencies. Michael Page are just one of many who specialise (although not exclusively) in marketing roles.

    Good luck!

The BA will help - however experience is key.

Marketing is a bit of a large beast so I would start by finding your niche - what type of marketing is that you feel you could specialise in - DM, eMarketing, Product/Brand Management, Digital, Agency/Customer side, SEO/PPC.

Once you have this then you should study other companies who use that medium and get a grip of common marketing techniques that are currently being used. You can then use this knowledge at the interview stage.

However, you need to be aware that you will probably need to start as Marketing Assistant level and then work upwards.

    Hope this helps.

I am very concerned about my job. Also, there have been a number of companies interested in employing me who have put their positions on hold. Also, it is hard for my company to get parts for our products from suppliers. Everyone wants cash. However, this is the third time I have been through this in my lifetime. When we all decide to spend our way out of it, it will be over.

How hard, very hard. You've got a degree though so you should be creative and see what comes up.
