Are all religions really sects, that should be banned?

All major religions are really sects founded on myth, the only difference is they have a much bigger following?

What is the difference?

Update:

OK so what is the difference between telling people we came from Aliens to telling Africans not to use condoms so they die of AIDS, both misleading???

I believe you are confusing the words sect and cult.

Be that as it may, the 1st amendment to the Constitution of the United States begins with the words:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Therefore, banning religion would be illegal.

a sect is a section or subset of a religion

methodists and mormons, pentacostals and quakers are all sects, based on christianity.

some of these sects are so large that it is legitimate to talk about them as 'religions' in their own right and say - for example - that Mormonism is a christian religion, rather than a christian sect.

    generally sect = (relatively) small

I think the term you are looking for is 'cult'

this is one of those terms which has a different meaning depending on which dictionary you use !!!

Although, generally, 'Cult' has negative connotations (as in secretive, exclusive, believers giving up large sums of money to a charismatic leader, etc).

A cult can be big or small. an example of a cult is the "Co$" ('Church of $cientology)

the USA has some wondeful laws respecting religion doesn't it....

Keith Henson is still in jail, for the serious crimes of picketing outside the razor-wire encased 'Church of $cientology' Complex in california:

"Henson has been languishing in jail since he was taken into custody on May 8. For the crimes of picketing on a public highway, and responding to a joke in a usenet newsgroup, Henson has already spent more time behind bars than Paris Hilton will spend in total for driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content of 0.08%, driving with a suspended license, driving 70 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, and driving without headlights after dark.

Are you specific it is no longer some sort of APRIL fool shaggy dog tale . LOL! This guy sounds like an entire nutter to me. he's purely about frothing on the mouth with wild allegations that are completely fake and unfounded. He needs to exterminate a minority faith. those are human beings he's conversing approximately. If he's not a shaggy dog tale then he's a daunting echo of the 0.33 REICH.... What else has he have been given in techniques for Scientologists after he's banned their faith? besides i do no longer think of the British fought and ultimately won WW ll to unlock the peoples of Europe from Germany's dictatorship and tyranny and non secular persecution to now be listening to and pondering emulating extra of an analogous in 2010 from Germany. it is organic insanity. it is actual no longer Christian !! LOL

True all religions are mostly based off of the same ancient religions and then society molds it to fit the best it can. I think as a whole religion is nessacary to help control the population and give comfort to those in need. Though as a whole religion has proved to be a tool for evil, including the murder and social distruction of many peoples.

It all depends on how you personally interpret all the above.....Personally i define it as SPIRITUALISM....

Your interpretation of right and wrong should not be influenced by spiritualism.....A long time ago when literacy levels were low people used religion as a guide.....the roman empire helped empower christianity...the pope was the most powerfull figure.....there are alot wonderfull things that can be learned from religion.....you can choose to join any spiritual group ...but as long as it doesnt not interfere with your judgement. Use a condom -if you sleep around -you will kill less people. If your 13 year old daughter were raped by a murderer and was pregnant ........... common sence prevails

Im glad I dont stay in america after Jim K's answer! Yes Id love to ban religion. My step sister goes to a religious camp every year where the sing songs about My Big God and the like. It makes me feel really uneasy that she is being brainwashed..

They are certainly all sects, I don't think they should or could be banned but their powers should be kept in careful check. Obvious politicking should result in loss of any tax-free status, and the law should be applied fully wherever religious organisations attempt to cajole voters or to coerce politicians, the law is already there but it is seemingly not enforced at all.

Faith-based welfare is really sect-based welfare, faith schools are in fact sect schools...it makes them sound warm and fuzzy if you call them faith this or that's rather than sect this or that's.

myths are based on actual facts. lets not talk about difference OK. lets talk about similarities. religions are brought by the prophets. the similarities is that they all try to prove the existence of god. and all religion also emphasis doing good to other people to get blessing from go.

All major religions are based upon 'Truth', 'justice' and 'righteousness'. The 'vested interests' misuse and misinterpret religion through dividing it into petty sects, these people who are interested only in serving their narrow self interests abuse religions in the name of upholding them. This misinterpretation of divine laws is the worst sin committed by such people on humanity. The divine laws will follow their own course and will surely punish the individuals and nations who propogate 'falsehood', 'injustice' and 'sin'.

I believe that sects are smaller versions of religions if you like. Scientology is one and does derive from the Christian Faith but are not believed by a huge amount of people.

So I'm not 100% but it's like an umbrella religion is the umbrella and the sects are mini religions underneath it!
