How to I apply for a refund of overpaid income tax?

I was hanging on for an hour on the Inland Revenue phoneline, with no answer so am asking on here. I worked a new job this year and was massively over-taxed, and have a lot of overpaid tax on my P60 that I need to claim back. I dont know how to go about this or where to contact (preferbaly somewhere that answers phones or emails!)

There is no quick way unless you happen to phone when they're not too busy. You need to write to the tax office named on your P60, make sure you tell them both your national insurance number AND the tax office reference number (best if you can send a photocopy of the P60 - NOT the original: that's your only proof!), and say in your letter that you want any refund due to you. Then wait for a reply. It will get processed.

If you are near an HMRC Enquiry office you could try visiting them, but you might well have to queue and would probably be told what I have just said anyway.

You should get your money back automatically eventually, but in the meantime you need to contact the tax office that deals with your tax affairs, the contact details should be on your notice of coding, or other documentation received from the tax office.

Try phoning during off-peak periods like mid morning and mid afternoon.
