What should a 9 week old puppy eat?
I just got a toy poodle on Sunday. She's 9 weeks old. So far, I have been giving her water and Pedigree Puppy food. Is that okay? My friend keeps saying that she shouldn't be drinking water and shouldn't be eating food, and that she should be drinking milk. Do you agree with her?
Or is what I'm feeding her is okay.?
Any other tips would be great. =]

Congrats on your new pup.
In answer to the drinking only milk comment your friend made.....NO, even if she were still nursing, by 9 weeks, she would be expected to be eating some form of solid food and drinking water. if she werent she would be very ill. Young pups begin to eat and drink by around 3 weeks-ish. They are weaned between 6 and 12 weeks-ish. Each pup is an individual. Some wean earlier, some later. Hopefully you got your pup from a reputable breeder!?
I do not feed commercial dog food, I feed only raw foods,(raw meat, raw bones, raw organs) so thats what I would suggest. If she had never had raw, then you would have to start slow....but its far more involved than what your question implies you are seeking. :-) If you would like more information on a raw diet, please feel free to email me and I will share whatever info I have with you.
I am also going to offer some vaccine info for your new baby.

Check out that site, top to bottom and corner to corner...consider it homework for the good health of your new pup and if you need motivation just remind yourself that you need to get an A or she is going to suffer!
Again congrats on your new pup and feel free to email me for additional infomation, or with questions,

From what I was told Pedigree is a great dog food as a store bought. You should be keeping the puppy's food moist for the 1st few months. If your ever really unsure about something you can call any vet and they will tell you what they think you should do. Having the puppy drinking water is great too. Giving the puppy milk at that age is wrong. When you buy a puppy from a breeder or store, the puppy is weened off the mothers milk by the time the puppy has left the breeder. So no I don't agree with your friend. I too have a puppy and an adult dog and they are both on Orijen. Orijen is an all natural dog food and there are no grains. Grains usally causes those nasty farts that you want to leave the room crying. Do some research for dog foods out there on the market and then you can decide on the dog food you want to feed your new puppy. I no I dont want to eat crappy food so why would your dog want to eat crappy food. Good Luck

I have raised many litters of Shetland Sheepdogs . Among those I have found one or two in each to be food aggressive. This many be ok among litter mates, but NOT with you. You need to stop this while he is still a puppy. You did not say if there are children in the picture, even so a visitor might get bit if near the food dish. I found that picking a small puppy up and a gentle shake, with a firm ,NO when they show aggression at dinner time worked for me. You control the food not them. It may take more than one time. Every dog must know you are the alpha dog always and in every case. Many dogs have had to be put down because of food aggression. Good Luck!

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aUSq1
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

hi,
A puppy eats a lot of food. From birth up to six months of age, he'll need to eat two to four times as much as an adult dog to support all that growth. A good rule of thumb (paw?) is that after his first week of life, when his weight doubles from what it was at birth, a puppy should gain one to two grams per pound of anticipated adult weight each day. This means that if your German Shepherd puppy weighs 75 pounds as an adult, he should gain three to five ounces per day as a puppy.
here are some guidelines:

hope this helps.

Water is fine.. Pedigree is a garbage dog food.. NOT good nutrition for a growing puppy. .She should NOT be drinking milk.. I disagree with your friend entirely, Don't listen to anything she tells you..
Get a good quality dog food.. Feed the food dry, give the dog a bowl of fresh clean water 24 /7.

Definitely feed her puppy food! If she has a hard time eating it or if she doesn't seem to be drinking much water, you can put a little bit of warm water mixed in w/dry food. She should do just fine!

no milk, my vet says its as bad for them as cheese and chocolate and milk and cheese can constipate your dog which is really bad for pups. puppy chow is fine and water is right. most start eating solid foods along with nursing anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. Pedigree is a decent brand according to my vet but as it gets older try to mix in a better quality food with it and wean it away from puppy food. although i personally kept my dogs on puppy food for the first full year since they are still in the puppy growing age the first year. after that i went to purina one lamb and rice or pedigree large breed formula for adults and puppies but mine are large breed dogs. sure there are better brands, but my dogs wont eat them, and not eating isn't good for them. so use what they will eat that is the best quality you can afford.

First milk isn't too good for dogs it upsets there stomach and gives them gas. And pedigree is a low quality food.Heres a list of good foods by price.
Innova what i use=35-40$
California Natural=30-35$
Karna=20-30$
These are really good foods they are natural foods with good meat based products. Good amounts of protein also.
