What are working Mums rights when their child is sick?

I had to take a day of work due to my 5 year old daughter being off school with vomiting. I have been told at work I have to take it as a day sick (even though I was not the one sick) This will also affect my Christmas bonus as it is based on attendance. I have worked for the company for 9 years and I have 7 years 100% attendance. I have never had to take time off for any of my children being ill. I always though the law was that any parent can take time off if their child is sick and this should just be authorised unpaid leave not affecting your own sick leave. I would like to know what is correct and if possible links to a website confirming this. I'm in the UK so it has to be rights for working families in the UK. Thanks!

Update:

Nosmo king I am not asking to be paid for the time off. I am stating that it should be authorised leave without pay and not one of my own sick days as I was not sick! The Laws in the UK state that you can take time off to look after a sick dependant and it is classed as authoursied leave. I wanted a website to confirm this. Like I said I have 7 years 100% attendance and have never taken time off with my children being sick. So unless you have a constructive answer to my question keep your opinion to yourself.

    Hi,

Everywhere I have worked would have classed this as leave (either using your annual leave allocation or unpaid). I agree that as you were not the peson sick, it should not count as sickness absence.

    I hope this link helps

I think this is personal to the company you work for.

At my work if I'm off due to my son being ill I either have to take it unpaid or use my holiday.

However by law if you have a child under the age of 6 then your employer has to accommodate you in a reasonable manner, although I'm not sure if this applies to your child being sick.

I don't know of any websites but I'm fairly sure, as you say, that you should be able to have it as unpaid authorised leave.

By law you should be able to take time off for poorly kids. It should not effect your sick record as you are not sick. It should be authorised unpaid leave. That's what they do where i work

I work for the NHS and we get "carer's leave" for when our children are sick; however, my friend took time off for her daughter and because she herself had been off sick twice she was still referred to occupational health (they have a policy of 3 episodes of sickness in a 12 month period is automatic referral).

I think it depends on your workplace and their own interpretation of the law.

As the law stands, any parent with a child under 16 can take unpaid leave if the child is sick. However can I say, it's not fair on your poor work mates who do not have children.

But that's how the law stands.

I believe that you are aloud around 4-5 days a year off for your children being sick - however every company is different. My husband is entitled to this with his company but I am not in my job.

Do you have a labor board there or Human Resources you could speak with?

Usually, we have to use our own sick leave for children. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is.
