Stem cells can be gathered in many ways.

The most controversial way is by taking them from an embryo while it is still in the womb, however these are omnipotent cells, meaning they can be coaxed into becoming whatever organ the doctors need.

However, scientists are breaking the barriers of this ethical dilemma by taking an adult cell, "cleaning it out", injecting the person's DNA into it, and forcing it to, in a way, reverse it's life span back to when it was omnipotent. By doing this, it is the same thing as getting it from an embryo, only you can use any type of adult cell instead, including skin cells (which are a dime a dozen).

Source(s): I worked at a university over the summer and got to see stem cells and do research regarding what I mentioned above, it's amazing. I don't know if that information is on a website or not, but this website looks like it will help your general understanding: http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/
