The reason it is being taken so seriously is because the expenses would be just the tip of the iceberg, a mole digs deep, creates a lot of dirt, makes a nuisance of themselves and are blooming difficult to eradicate. They are worried that this "mole" will dig deep enough and shovel up all manner of other dirt that they certainly do not want made public and the mole would be the only one to survive.
