Does excessive laptop use promote poor posture?

If so, what steps should we take to use laptops safely?

Not just poor posture, but carpal tunnel and other problems. Since we tend to lug them wherever and use them that way, we hunch, we hover, we slouch. Me, I lay back on my recliner with my knees propped up! At least I use a lumbar pillow to help a bit. But then the position of the keys (flat and often recessed back from the edge of the laptop) and the mouse substitutes causes us to bend our hands, wrists and fingers unnaturally, without support or cushioning. None of that is really helpful to old bodies already prone to arthritis!

    Depends.

If you are sitting at a table upon which laptop is placed then no, laptop won't promote poor posture. But!!,....

If you are in the common area at school or in a coffee shop & you have either placed the laptop on a coffee table & are hunched over using it, or you are in a nice comfy, fluffy chair using the laptop then the use of laptop is encouraging bad posture.

But really I've never heard or seen a laptop promote or encourage bad posture, it really is the user who is engaging in bad posture while using laptop.

  • Depends. I slouch, do you? A chair with a back, for good posture. Ideally, I wouldn't use this, but that's another story. Had a bench for my laptop. I'm on it now. It rests on a vanity desk. I now have a chair with backing and a pillow. It's better. Trust me. I would rather type from my Lazy boy.

It really depends on the way you're sitting.

If you are slouching then that will definitely give you poor posture.

Yes it will I believe, from the way some people crouch over them.

Perhaps there should be diagrams on the best ways to use them.

    Yes, I know it does!!!

My back hurts, my shoulders and neck get stiff.

I have to keep reminding myself to sit up straight.

They ought to come up with a pop up on the computer screen that reminds people to sit up straight.
