Why all the fuss over Jackie Chan's comments?

Those who don’t agree with Jackie have no idea what China is like. The majority of the Chinese would agree with Jackie, including both of my native Chinese parents. And Jackie makes a great point. The Chinese people aren’t ready for total freedom yet or things would turn out chaotic, as Jackie said. The Chinese can’t behave themselves due to the fact that Chinese don’t have a strong moral teaching background such as religion.

If Jackie Chan really is against China, or what others consider now, a "traitor", he'd let China have its total freedom and watch his beloved Country collapse due to riots and other horrible sprees.

If they can't even stop their cities from being smogged by their own factories... what makes them think they can do better with "freedom"?

This isn't any "recist" or "traitor" comment he's making. He's expressing how his people will be due to how they've been throughout the past years. I mean, look at the recent Olympics, if they can't control themselves at such an event... why do they even deserve this? Truely, the Chinese--or anyone for that matter--who are against Jackie Chan clearly do not see or understand what his comments spoke of. He wants to save China from being any worst than it is already.

If it means being hated because I want to help a country out, then I'm on Jackie's side too.

When the British had it was long ago. There is no exception of course to that I understand, but we are talking about now and the future. I completely see why you'd mention these and why Jackie Chan has his own point of view as well, but this is something--to me--that's quite hard to explain.

China doesn't need US-style democracy.

Taiwan was a military dictatorship for nearly 40 years, they built up their economy without freedom or democracy.

Hong Kong was a British colony for over 100 years, no democracy there while Britain ruled Hong Kong.

He was referring to free Chinese like in Taiwan. He said they aren't ready in mainland China to have such freedom. He points to Tawain as an example. Which I totally disagree with Mr. Chan. But he's entitled to his opinions. Lucky for the Chinese he's not a politician.
