Recent "Where is my Hard Disk Memory"?

Question

Thank you for your help in finding out where some of the the 'lost' disk space has gone. 
Switching off Sytem restore gained 3.5GB
Disc Cleaner gained another 2.2GB
Recycle Bin gained another 4.2GB
However, I have still 'lost' 21GB!?
I realise that there are system files and programmes taking up some room....but not 21GB.
There are no huge picture, music or video files.
So, where is it??

Are you using Vista, it needs at least 15GB.

Could be a number of reasons, your operating system will use about 10gig, you could also have a backup of the os which is another 10 gig. I wouldn't recommend disabling System Restore, you can make it use less disc space. Download some cleaning tools like CCleaner and a defragmentter.

 TBH 80 gig isn't much nowadays.

Im not sure about this, but theres a difference between what HD space they sell you and what the pc tells you have.

For example, I bought a 500GB external HD but the PC said I only had something like 480GB. This doesnt mean that you have lost any space, but how the PC intreprets what a MB is to a GB. 

Companies use 1000MB for a GB, but the PC uses 1024MB for a GB.

Download the free spacemonger http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php which will tell you where the space went. 

Drastic loss of space as well as slow performance is a sign of hard drive failure, if you think that this is hapening, backup now and, if possible, replace the drive. If not, be prepared for it to fale

Look for hiberfil.sys it will be the same size as your memory if you don't use hibernation turn it off.
