Is it possible to buy the Nexus One w/out a data plan?

I'm currently on T-mobile w/ my family. I don't want to switch to an individual plan. Can I buy it unlocked and use it on my family's voice only plan? Does the phone need to be activated over the net? Yes, I realize I won't be able to surf the web. I want it as media player/mini PC/camera. I hate carrying too many gadgets.

    It's likely that T-Mobile will allow you to use the Nexus without a data plan if pay full price for the unlocked version.

    You can order it online at google.com/phone and you can personalise it as there is a metal piece near the bottom for engraving.
