Flute or Clarinet which is easier?

Hi i'm grade 4 piano at the moment, and I am going to take on either the flute or clarinet.

Basically is it easier to play the flute or the clarinet? So would it be easier to take on the flute or clarinet with a piano background?

By the way, whats the difference between the straight headjoint and the curved headjoint? and which is better?

Also are flutes or clarinets generally more expensive if I bought a beginner flute/clarinet? With beginner packs, what grade would they last till, and when would I need to buy a better quality one?

Thanks:)

They both have their challenges! The difference between a curved/straight head joint is the shape. Some beginner flute players e.g. seven or eight years old. can't reach the keys.so they need a shorter flute! Both still sound like flutes. Unless you are 7 or 8 I would go for the regular head joint.

Generally they are the same price depending on where you get them whether they are new/used etc. Although with Clarinets you have the ongoing expense on reeds. but that is just music. How long instruments last depend on how much you use it. If you play almost every day you will progress in a few years.

I would say they are about the same, but i prefer the clarinet to the flute. a curve head joint is one that i would say is for someone who cant reach to the straight head joint flute. i would say that if you were going to go with a clarinet, buy a plastic one because they are less expensive and can talk a bit more wear and tear that a wooden one. if you are going to buy the beginner flute/clarinet, then i would say yamaha is a good starter brand but you have to begin on a low reed for the clarinet. some people say that the reeds are too much to take care of and cost more but if you just put them somewhere safe so they wont break, they will last a lot longer. you can always start with one and then learn the other later...

    hope this helps...

Flute is easier (but not easy). I favor the clarinet for its wonderful tone qualities and wide range of notes. If you love music I dont know that either would make a difference as far as which is easier.

I've played flute for 6 years and last year i tried the clarinet. I think it was much easier, but i really hated it.

Clarinet is somewhat harder than the flute. Flute requires lots of practice, as do clarinets. Clarinets need new reeds constantly. Flutes need nothing of the sort. both need Extreme lip and mouth muscles, but sometimes clarinets tend to malfunction, and not to mension, clairanets cn be way more pricey than flutes.

I play the piano, and im my jusge ment the clarinet is eaisier. you dont need to an expensive one, all you really upgrade in are reed sized, from 1-2-21/2-3s and yada yada. I love hte clarinet ive been playing since i was in 4th grade im in 9th. helps with fingers. You sorta have to stretch. I find it easier cause you vibrate the reeds, i think the clarine has a lovley sound. The clarient has a very large range. And I absolutly love it. Take it from me. who's been playing clarinet from 4th grade up and piano since 2nd grade ^.^ Clarinets Are worth the money they are. i dont even know how much i payed for it. but it's worth it. Clarients last forever, and their really fun to play in marching band.

I play both and personally I favour the flute.

The curved head joint is for a person with a small reach (usually a child)

I would try and get a used instrument or loan one before committing to a new expensive one, just to see if you like it.

well, honestly it all depends on the player. don't ask us which would be easier. you do which one YOU think you'd be better at. i prefer the clarinet. but that's just me. but the price range differs for both instruments but they generally aren't that far in difference for the price range. my clarinet i've had for about 5 years.(i've only played it for like 4) but it's lasted really well. but i actually have to get a new one because i've grown out of it. i need a more advsnced one. but back to the topic! but you would have to buy a new one, when you feel that you have grown out of it(for me about 4-5 yrs) but it's different for every one. hope i helped :)
