It is legal to get married to your cousin but cousin marriages in the family are known to have kids with defects.

In Canada it is legal. I have 1st cousins that are married to each other. As long as your blood is compatible (testing) having children is not a problem. My cousins have 5 (now grown) daughters and are the proud grandparents of one. All are healthy with no mental or physical defects.

Historically first cousins marrying was quite the norm as it kept land and power within the family. Just check out English history, I don't know when western cultures decided it was no longer acceptable but at one time people wouldn't have blinked an eye over it.

Yes first cousins is illegal here. And the reason is genetic symmetry. You are more likely to pass on a hereditary abnormality that wouldn't otherwise be dominant because it is only carried on one gene. But if you marry your first cousin then you are both likely to pass on the same genetic abnormality thus guaranteeing that the child will have it. Also it is just gross.

It is illegal in the US because having children between two closely related people can cause birth defects or a child that is mentally damaged.

You may, but remember it is not advisable to go for a sanguine marriage. It is your offspring who suffer, due to physical or mental disability. My advise to you is DONT.
