I've annoyed a chap in a simulator.?

At my father's work there is a B737 facility that includes a simulator.

As it is Sunday nobody uses the simulator and it was not booked therefore my father asked a training Captain whether he would show me the ropes as he would hate to think I would be flying turboprops.

So we were on our final approach into EGBB as we were performing a simple circuit.

He handed control to me 15nm DME away and because I'm one of these people who likes simplicity the night before I'd decided to get the ILS information and still on autopilot I put it into the Nav 1 radio and with the EFIS set to the correct setting.

I looked for some reason to the left and saw his suddenly angered face and I thought what's his problem so we got the minimums and I made a great landing but when we left he didn't say a word until I heard him raising his voice shouting 'He think he's ******* clever using the ILS does he?

So please what do you think may have angered him.

    Too bad for him.

Waaahhh! Quit yer whining, you got to fly a sim.

AND, you'd have probably crashed without ILS.

    There are several possibilities.

He may have resented the fact that you landing safely without having 15,000 hours of flying experience as a licensed pilot. Some people learn slowly, others learn quickly, and those who learn slowly tend to strongly resent those who learn quickly.

Another possibility is that he felt you should have profited from the sim time to hand-fly the aircraft, rather than use the automation. Anyone can fly an airliner using automation, even without practice, as long as he has clear instructions. Hand-flying, on the other hand, requires a lot of practice, and so logically you'd use sim time to practice hand-flying, although it's true that using the automation is more realistic, since that's how it is often done in real life.

As a Training Captain, he was handing you control of the aircraft and expected you to disengage the FD and fly the approach manually. He wanted to evaluate YOUR ability to handle the approach and landing, NOT the computer's ability.

Try that on a employment check ride or interview evaluation and you will be out on the street, still looking for work.

yeah there's something going on w/ him

I've actually gotten to use a military simulator myself. When I was 13 my dad knew a guy who ran the static F-14 Simulator at NAS Mirimar (now MCAS Mirimar) and though I had to push myself up a bit in the seat to see through the HUD my dad says the guy was pretty impressed w/ how I was able to fly it.

So yeah, I think this guy's got issues

If it happened, I would suspect that after he went through the procedures of firing up the sim, AND wasting his time- he was expecting you to FLY the approach.

    ahem.

what is the point of riding the simulator, if it flies on its own (autopilot, following ILS and stuff?)

i mean, it makes sense as a part of a real pilot training (calm flight, all running well, pilot almost falling asleep and all of sudden OMG.. ENGINE FAILURE... OMG.. FIRE... OMG we lost half of the power supply...), however you as a visitor should have tried the MANUAL part of it.

Source(s): that probably was the point of that guy (assuming this story actually happened)

hes prob pi++ed off that he had to turn it on just for you to hit auto

he is probably jealous because it took him forever to figure out how to use ILS

I just hate it when that happens.
