How can I get plastic cutting boards back to white?

I want to remove the food discolouration from my standard plastic cutting boards - some of the stains (from carrots, chillis etc.) are very stubborn. I've tried both Baking Soda + Vinegar and soaking in Napisan, but neither really achieved any noteable result. Any tips?

I had this saved on my bookmarks. I always use the bleach one (number 2). Never had any problems and looks brand new.

You know what? I haven't tried to do this with a cutting board but I have with plastic bowls that I microwaved chili and spaghetti in several times. And it worked the first time and numerous times after. I just washed the bowls in dish water with a little bleach and let them dry outside in the sun. Looked like nothing ever had touched them. Try it out and let me know. I wished I would've thought about this at work some time back. It sure worked with the bowls.

You have to let the bleach soak in for a while. I lay my plastic cutting board on the bottom of the sink and spray it with water. Then I slowly pour about a quarter cup of bleach across the top of it to completely cover it, and let it soak for about 15 minutes. Then I rinse it off with hot water and, except for the cuts and scratches, it looks good as new.

    Several things to try:

Clorox Clean Up with bleach - spray on and leave overnight.

Denture cleaning tablets with stain remover - dissolve in hot water and soak board overnight in it.

Biological stain remover/washing powder - use cold water though as hot water will destroy the enzymes.

Once you have it all white again, coat the board with a thin layer of cooking oil - this will help prevent the stains penetrating next time. You will need to re-apply the oil each time you wash the board.

OK this is what i do and it is like a new surface when i do it i get some sand paper and sand it with a sand sponge sold at the local hardware store. Rinse water add a tiny bit of bleach. Sanding also takes care of all the cuts that can get mold in them =P

You could use bleach but it may leave a bleachy smell for the food. Best to throw out and buy a new one.

Soak bleach on stains, wash, rinse and let dry. make sure no bleach odor remains after dry--if so, just wash again. Buy bamboo next time is is easier on your knives and the environment!
