How can I remove labels from jam jars?

I like to reuse jam jars and refill them with jam of my own making but labels nowadays seem to be fixed with a particularly sticky gum. Does anyone out there know of an effective way of removing them?

Soak them like the others said then remove the small amount of sticky glue that you can not get off with peanut butter on a paper towel. Rub the sticky spots firmly and it will come right off on to the paper towel with the use of the dab of peanut butter. Sounds crazy but it works great and is something most people have on hand. I use it all the time to remove sticky price tag residue off plastic and glass items I have purchased. It will not scratch either as some things will and is not flammable as some of the things people tell you to use.

    Labels For Jam Jars

Soaking the bottles in warm vinegar (a little bit of dish washing liquid in there might help) does a pretty good job. Scour the labels with a fork to the vinegar can reach the adhesive. If the vinegar doesn't work, there are two products on the market that work very well: Goo Gone and Goof Off. Goo Gone is gentler and works on most jobs, but Goof Off may be needed for more stubborn adhesive. Try scouring the label, applying the product, letting it sit for 15 minutes, then scraping it off with a butter knife or something similar.

Fill the jars with as much hot water as it can stand (not boiling otherwise the jars will crack). The hot water will melt the gum and allow you to peel the sticker away more easily. Then use something like white spirit or lighter fuel with a cloth to remove any residual gum. Wash the jar thoroughly.

Soak the jar in really hot water to soften the paper and gum. Peel off as much as you can. Use an organic solvent such as acetone (nail varnish remover) to get rid of any left over tacky bits.

Soak the empty jars in warm water until the labels soften up, and then scrape off the paper with a butter knife.

Soak the bottles in soapy water overnight it should just come of.. if there are still residues of the gum just use a little bit of spirit (turpentine, alcohol etc) with a cloth and rub it off.

Soak the jar in diluted Dawn dishwashing liquid.

Soak them in hot water and then use nail varnish remover on any glue that's left, before rinsing them properly again.
