I got penalty points tonight and I now feel like a failure...?

I got pulled over by the police tonight because I went through a red light(they said) which I honestly didnt see. I know I completely deserve the penalty points and the fine, I really do. I cannot help but be really upset by my own failure. I am a restricted driver and only passed my test in june, so if I get another 3 points before next june I loose my licence (and have to re-do my theory). I know its pointless now to say I am normally such a careful driver, I do the correct limits for restrcited drivers, whilst I watch others speed past me.

I am waiting until other people in my house go to bed so I can self harm as a punishment for being such a complete failure in everything! I deserve it. If I could beat myself up good enough I would.

I dont really want anything as an answer, theres not much for anyone to say, i just needed to say it to someone

Update:

I probably should have added that i have self harmed on an off over the years, I have mental health problems and do seek support for them and am on meds etc but that basically life is constantly seeming awful and this just adds to it

Hi SH2007, I understand how you feel, it's not the confrontation with the police and getting a ticket it is about you actually making the mistake. I suspect feel you have let yourself down and you are now a failure.

I promise you are not a failure, it is simply you 'head' telling you that. One significant problem with mental health issues, is that the mind can make incidents in life, much larger than they actually are. Your mind is telling you this is an enormous problem and it really isn't. You made a genuine mistake, that's all.

So, when you go out in your car next, don't immediately think I mustn't do anything wrong because if I lose the remaining 3 points - well, you know the rest.

So, I don't want you to punish yourself because you haven't done anything wrong and it won't make the situation any better in fact, it will be worse and you will know that if you are a 'cutter'. Please don't put yourself through that, you've had enough to deal with this evening. Instead, see if you can talk to your 'support' during this this coming week. You go off to bed and have a good night's sleep and you may see things a bit clearer tomorrow.

You said you didn't want an answer but you will probably get a few, you don't get away with posting a question and not getting an answer.

    Take care.

that's silly first off millions get penalty points (even government ministers)

So if you feel like self harming talk to someone.

If you really feel bad make an effort to improve your driving, look at your driving style and think about ways you can improve, read over the highway code again. Make a conscious effort to be more careful when driving.

Being a responsible driver, is learning from your mistakes and constantly remembering that things can and will jump out at you.

And how is self-harming punishment? If you want to punish yourself do something that takes some effort like volunteering, doing an exercise session, working through a maths book (things you won't necessarily enjoy will make you think about what you did wrong, is not over quickly, and most importantly are constructive)

Do not harm yourself! You did not do anything wrong worth do anything so dramatic to yourself that you will look back on an regret. Also if you do anything overly dramatic you need to think of what your family will think and how they will fell. Yes it looked like people were speeding by because you were in your car at a stop! So people will always look like they are going fast. Just take the ticket as a lesson to be more cautious. Also if you do something to yourself you can loose the chance of getting your licence because a doctor can see you as unfit to drive and will send a message off to the Transportation office.

there is no need to self harm whatsoever there is nothing to suggest that you are a failure at all, it was a simple mistake ppl make mistakes every day, thousands and thousands of drivers drive thru red lights, I'm sure you are normally a careful driver,it just happens

please dont be this hard on yourself, its not worth it

if you always feel so bad about yourself why not speak to a counsellor to explore why you feel so bad about this and prob other aspects of your life/personality

    take care

note to Stephen!! strangely its not just"emo" kids who self harm ,grow up ,if you cant answer a question in a sensible manner dont bother at all

You are not a failure. Anybody can get points at any time even the most careful of drivers. You are a good person and a very careful one. I know it must have really upset you and shaken you up, but please don't hurt yourself because of it.

You weren't a failure when you passed your driving test first time. You have achieved so much. You are definitely not a failure.

    I am here for you.

OMG...you feel like a failure because you got penalty points?...You should feel like a failure if you dropped out of H.S. for no good reason, you should feel like a failure if you abondened your child, you should feel like a failure if you are heavy into drugs and/or alcohol and not doing anything productive with your life.....but feeling like a failure because you got penalty points??...No hun, you're not a failure, just learn from your mistake and be careful next time..thats all...x

Keep your head up, we all make mistakes....
