How to get Religion out of schools?
The USA seems to have a major problem with religion preventing children learning that there are many other faiths but more importantly that it is fine to be atheist and that it makes more sense to spend time one important subjects then on learning about fairy stories from an old book that makes no sense.
Wow a great response and very varied. Thank you all.
I guess to Christians, what I am asking is something that will fall on deaf ears with you :-(
I don't pray for you, I just hope that you will realises sooner then later that you will not reach Heaven or Hell as you have been mislead to believe. Instead you die and decay or are cremated and your body once again becomes part of the earth. That is what was meant by being 're-born'.
If I told you I was God or a Son of God you wouldn't trust me. But why not?
Anyway I guess to keep the rich and wealthy happy we need the 'blind' faithful who are easy to control. Personally I think it is so sad.

Learning about other religions or that "it is fine to be atheist" is more or less beyond the scope of public (read: tax-funded) education. Otherwise, if it's a private school, they can teach whatever religion they want.
Individual students have the right to believe what they want, set up an extra-curricular club if they want, and even pray (so long as they're not disrupting others). You just can't lead an entire class in prayer, or teach the Bible as if it was dogma or science, etc. So I don't see what the problem is for Christians, atheists, OR people of other religious convictions.

Prof. Richard Dawkins has asked this question for years now.
He once asked a science teacher in a religious school how old the earth was. The teacher replied that it was 6,000 years old. Dawkins asked how the teacher came to this answer. The teacher said that many religious scholars had added up how long generations of people went back in the stories of the bible and they came to an approximation of 6,000 years (we all know this story).
The problem is, this is a SCIENCE teacher teaching young impressionable children this BS. This is incredible! As a parent, wouldn't you be worried that your child wasn't being offered the chance to explore actual scientific reasoning in their science class, rather than them being taught one completely flawed idea and led to believe it as irrefutable fact?! I mean, even if god was real and christianity is right, then the supposed mistakes of these scientists would have no real meaning on the childs life! By exploring things that are incorrect, we learn what is correct.

I don't think Religion should be taken out of school. I enjoyed taking World Religions as a elective while I was in High School. Religion and its history is important. If its removed from schools. Then it will lead to the removal of it in colleges. Which will further remove scholarly books on Religion and other important religious works.
If its removed everything connected to it will be also. Including television shows such as the History Channel and American History. So I disagree with the idea that Religion should be removed.

Freedom of religion, Guaranteed in the constitution. The only argument is which one? Atheism being not a religion would exclude it from the same privilege. If atheism is a religion it would be afforded the same rights. You would have to argue on grounds to have the time set aside for each individuals use and no mass teachings to be truly free of secular forcing of religion and therefore the freedom.
Would be a time consuming argument to keep it as it already is. You will not be able to remove God from the constitution, The law makers will not do it. It is the foundation of where law comes from. They would be shooting themselves in the foot to do so.

Err, learning about religion in Religious Studies isn't a bad thing. You learn about all the major world religions from an unbiased point of view. I think America could benefit from this. Maybe the people there wouldn't be so ignorant of even their own religion then.
The education system here is the 8th best in the world so it can't be that bad eh?
How strange that it's illegal to learn about religion in school there.

If your teachers were able to teach, or if you were able to learn you would know about 7*21*1925.
It is when America got religion(God) out of American public schools[Scopes' 'monkey' trial], also in the 1960s when prayer was removed. So God has been out of the American school system for 50 years now!
Maybe that is why the school system is such a mess!
As if I would allow a liberal, leftist, godless college professor to indoctrinate my child anything religious!
What is your excuse?

They don't teach religion in public school. Kids are allowed to privately pray, meditate, etc if they want to as long as it does not interrupt. But it is against the law to teach religion in public schools. You can take religion classes in college however but that is a choice. What I think is really going on here is yet another person who loves being the victim...

It is very difficult to at the present moment but we need to elect atheists into office in order to achieve that goal. Or support groups like American Atheists, Freedom From Religion Foundation ect..

Firstly, it's important that we don't simply avoid religion completely, it should be taught, but it should be taught as the subject; "Religion" and not preached a single truth throughout all lessons. As for the actual how, that's beyond me.

There is called law called separation of Church and state. religion is suppose to have no dealings with States schools and are supported by state tax's. I was beat up in 3rd grade because I don't salute he flag or celebrate christian holidays. In the bible Babylon the Great (false religion) is riding a beast representing world governments. Our children are being bombarded by goverment propaganda.
