Can anyone help with my Pachira or Braided Money Tree?

Question

It is about 4 or 5 years old and has a sticky substance on the leaves, it first appeared in the summer.Several leaves have shed, but it still has several green ones. It used to have 4 braids but one died about a year ago so I took it out. I water it about once a week, it lives in the conservatory so gets plenty of sun.

Does any one know what the sticky stuff could be? How do I get rid of it? Or is my plant dying?
