UK Driving licence points - how long do they stay on your licence?
This guy I know has told me he has to wait until June for three points to come off his licence so he has to be careful he doesn't get caught speeding between now and then. He has nine points so far. Another three points and he would be banned and he needs his licence for his job (self-employed).
He seems to have this whole system worked out to keep his licence.
So, for how long do points stay on your licence in Northern Ireland? I asked him and now he's not sure. He thinks it's either three, four or five years. How can anyone live like that?
Many thanks.

Eleven years from date of conviction
If the offence is:
•drinking or drugs and driving - shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80
•causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs – shown on the licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60
•causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis – shown on the licence as CD70
Example: Date of conviction is 3 December 2002 - the endorsement must stay on the licence until 3 December 2013.
Four years from the date of conviction
If the offence is for:
•reckless/dangerous driving - shown on the licence as DD40, DD60 and DD80
•offences resulting in disqualification
•disqualified from holding a full driving licence until a driving test has been passed
Example: Date of conviction is 28 May 2004 – the endorsement must stay on the licence until 28 May 2008.
Four years from the date of offence
In all other cases.
Example: Date of offence 10 June 2005 – the endorsement must stay on the licence until 10 June 2009.

Hello
Simple answer is it depends what they are for.
Link 1/ Points for offences
Link 2/ About points on licence
On the paper part of his driving licence it will have something like this.
Offence code Date of Conviction Date of Offence Fine £ Points
SP30 31/05/2007 03
SP30 21/11/2006 03
SP30 01/01/2005 03
In this case SP30 is a Speed Offence (Camera?) caught on 31st May 2007, No Fine, 3 Points
SP30 can be 3 to 6 points
Points must stay on for 4 years from 31/05/2007 so cannot be removed until 01/06/2011
Hope this clears things up for you

"He seems to have this whole system worked out to keep his licence."
Er, no, he would have a clean licence if he had worked the system out. He sounds a bit of an idiot to be honest by keeping his points tally just below the licence losing limit. Not to mention the extra he will be paying to his insurance company for the points.

GENERALLY IT IS THREE YEARS BEFORE THEY CAN BE REMOVED.
