  • Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 glass replacement.?

    I picked up a smashed CanoScan LiDE 60 scanner. I've removed all of the glass shards and fragments and re-assembled the scanner which, although lacking the glass, appears to work fine. It moves down and up and scans documents through a sheet of perspex laid on the flatbed.

    Canon have been no help in suggesting a suitable type of glass to replace the smashed piece.

    Do you know which type of glass should be used, and if possible, the dimensions?

  • UK Driving licence points - how long do they stay on your licence?

    This guy I know has told me he has to wait until June for three points to come off his licence so he has to be careful he doesn't get caught speeding between now and then. He has nine points so far. Another three points and he would be banned and he needs his licence for his job (self-employed).

    He seems to have this whole system worked out to keep his licence.

    So, for how long do points stay on your licence in Northern Ireland? I asked him and now he's not sure. He thinks it's either three, four or five years. How can anyone live like that?

  • What can I use as a printer ink absorption pad?

    I have an old inkjet printer. It's perfectly fine for printing but a recent overhaul revealed the printer ink absorption pad is completely full.

    Spares for this printer are no longer available but I'd like to refurbish the absorption pad using some new material.

    The original pad is paper based and so, rinsing it is pointless as it is likely to fall apart.

    I have seen foam used in more modern printers to do the same job.

    My search, then, is for a foam absorption material about 1cm thick. I can cut it using the original as a template.

    Usual searches on the internet reveal little except for specific printers and specific faults.

    Or absorption material that is either industrial or not suitable because of its composition or size.

  • In the UK, what is the legal position regarding missing or obscured number plates?

    I saw a car in Belfast today with a missing front number plate and the rear of the car was so filthy, the rear number plate was completely unreadable.

    Isn't there a legal requirement to keep the number plates legible especially regarding automatic number plate recognition? This vehicle could have tripped several speed cameras yet none of them would have been able to identify the car and its owner?

  • Upside down sensation... any ideas, please?

    Sometimes when I am sitting quietly at work or at home, I have an overwhelming sensation that I am being slowly turned upside down. Visually I am aware that I am sitting upright, but the sensation in my head is that my head is tipping forward and down and my feet are tipping back and up with the pivot through my waist, left to right.

    I don't do narcotics in any shape or form and this happens infrequently but it's still quite disconcerting. Maybe twice a month or so and for 2-3 minutes at a time.

    Any medical suggestions are most welcome. Thanks!

    How many years does a speeding offence remain on your record if you were pulled over by a state trooper? My friend reckons it's only 3 years but I tell him that it's probably more. He's already paid the fine but he's from out of state and wants to visit Colorado again to see some friends.

  • I'm trying to identify a car from a TV show called UFO - can you help please?

    In the episode "A Question of Priorities", Straker's son is knocked down outside the house he shares with his mum and stepdad. The car that knocks him down is silver, licence plate SFB 736 but I do not know what the make and model is. Can anyone clarify this please?

    Earlier, what looks like a white Porsche 911, crosses in front of Straker as he waits to leave the drive. But it's the silver one that comes after Straker, which young John does not see, that I am interested in.

    I've tried freeze-frame but there is no detail. There is a small badge on the front but difficult to make out.

    Been trying to nail it down based on the year in which the show was aired, so no post-1970's cars please.

  • Can you help me identify some toys from the 70's and 80's please?

    1. This was a collection of small humanoid figures in clear plastic with different coloured shiny insides. They were articulated but you could change their arms for weapons.

    2. What looked like a big rifle except the red end was a directional microphone.

    3. An orange/yellow wall down which a ball bearing travelled. You had to build a blue tower before a timer ran out and the ball bearing knocked over the tower.

    4. Fighting robots in a boxing ring - NOT "Sock 'em, Rock 'em" or "Raving Bonkers".

    5. An airplane that sat on top of a blue base. You filled it with parachutes. As the base rotated beneath it, you lined up the sights and dropped the parachutes into the dips in the rotating base. You could move the plane in and out to line up with drop points.

    6. A blue tray with white 'rockers'. You filled the blue tray with marbles, blue, red and yellow. There were cards with different patterns of blue, red and yellow 3x3 squares. As marbles fell to the bottom, the cards were filled up.

    I have checked the UK Vehicle Tax website but they only list 'disabled' or SORN. Can a vehicle be tax exempt for any other reason? Many thanks!

  • Oncologists please - Cancer in the femur - how bad is this?

    Okay, so I know someone who has had surgery and chemo for breast cancer and now they have been told that they have cancer in their femur. They had 15 lymph nodes taken during the lumpectomy and two of them were cancerous.

    What can potentially happen and what treatment might be offered? There had been talk of more chemo and then radiation therapy.

  • How can I recover a damaged Flash file?

    Flash MX.

    20MB file created on a Apple PowerBook G4. MacOS 10.4.11

    The power cord was accidentally pulled out and the laptop crashed.

    When restarted, the flash file does not open. There is an error message stating that it "Failed to open the file". No error code generated.

    I've had a google but nothing is jumping out regarding this kind of fault or how to fix it.

    Any help is greatly appreciated as this is examination material. If you know of an application that can help, please leave a link.

  • Have you been let down by a disposable Kodak camera?

    Just been on a once in a lifetime experience swimming with sharks and took a disposable Kodak waterproof camera to record some pictures.

    When the film was developed at a local trusted dealer, the entire film was overexposed and no images came out.

    My family are gutted at being disappointed this way. It's unlikely that I will ever get the chance to do this thing again.

    I chose the Kodak camera because I trusted the name to provide a quality product.

    The camera was never used in the water, only in air so I'm still not sure what went wrong.

    The developer said that these cameras fail more often than they work.

    What are your experiences with disposable cameras? Which brand would you recommend?

  • Replacing the wing mounted radio antenna on a 1999 Accent.?

    1999 Hyundai Accent. The wing mounted radio antenna has been broken off.

    I have a replacement antenna but I don't know how to gain access to the old one to replace it. Haynes do not publish a UK manual for this model.

    Do I have to remove the plastic wheel well covers to gain access to the antenna or is there some other route?

    I am finding it difficult to remove this plastic cover. It seems to be held in place by some plastic screws that are difficult to move. I don't want to force them and risk damaging them.

    I've been over many different pages through numerous search engines and cannot find a link.

    All help appreciated.

  • Vauxhall Corsa - Ignition coil question - can you help, please?

    I think the ignition coil in my Mum's Corsa is faulty.

    I have followed the Haynes manual to determine the short / open circuit condition of the test points. Unfortunately it doesn't give the expected measurements.

    Between any Low Tension (LT) point and the body of the coil is open circuit - infinite resistance as expected.

    Between the two LT points (primary coil) is a few tenths of an ohm as expected.

    Between any LT point and the HT pin (secondary coil to the distributor) is open circuit - Haynes says this should be a measurable resistance and not infinite as I have measured.

    Can someone with Vauxhall experience tell me if I need a new coil (or even a second hand one from a scrapyard - I'll test the readings first before buying) or even what the readings should be, please?

  • Do you know these old style Windows card games, please?

    I am looking for the names of 3 old Windows card games.

    The first one is called Calc or Calculator Solitaire or something.

    As you draw from a deck of cards, you have to arrange them in four rows.

    The first row goes, A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K.

    Second is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Q, A, 3 ... etc

    Third is 3, 6, 9, Q, 2, 5, 8, J ... etc

    Fourth is 4, 8, Q, 3, 7, J ... etc

    In the second card game, you have to a 4x4 grid and pair the cards off. I think there is a reference to an old house when the game completes. I seem to remember that the middle four spaces were a safe zone where you could store cards prior to pairing off.

    The third game is one where you have to sort the cards into suits. There are four horizontal rows. Initially they all fill up but then the aces disappear and you can only move cards into the empty space. I think there was a comment or saying when the game completes.
