Contact lens trial/fitting?

Where is the best place to go for a professional contact lens fitting, such as Asda, D&H, Boots, etc? I have unusual eyes and the "which is best, 1 or 2" type of test is no good to me. Do they do automated/computer tests using instruments that don't rely on me being able give an opinion? Such as using a keratometer and objective refraction?

Any ideas of costs for a trial would be useful.

Update:

Thanks, KittenCa, but my local fairly large NHS hospital don't do prescriptions for glasses, believe it or not. They've sent me to a particular optician but I'm looking for a second opinion - I don't mind paying for it.

Because of having unusual eyes I would go back to the hospital or place where you have your sight test and try and get a contact lens prescription from them. This is different to glasses. This means it will be correct for you.

Most normal opticians will use your opinion to determine your prescription s staying with your normal optician is best. If they dont. Then I would go into a reputable opticians and ask an Optometrist on their opinion. Not the sales team!! If the Optom feels they can give you a fitting then you can book an appointment. All Optoms are educated by the same registry so in that way there is no difference in Opticians. However all opticians will charge different rates.

Some places do FREE fitting for first time customers. I think Specsavers are doing it at the moment. But I think I paid £35 for mine.

    Hope this helps.

I know what you mean, I hate wearing glasses aswell ... so getting contact lenses was amazing, I could actually see without the inconvenience of glasses! You will basically be talked through how to insert them correctly. Don't wear make-up. You will then insert them yourself, it may take a while, but once they're in its worth it! I usually put the contact lense on my fore finger and then hold my eye open at the top and bottom with my thumb and fore finger on the other hand and then slowly put the lense into my eye ... always look away and put the lense in to the side of your retina. Then once in, look towards where you have placed the lense and hey presto! The hardest part is putting the lense in your eye as the natural reaction is to blink against it ... but pursevere, its worth it in the end. Then the rules, always wash hands, apply makeup after inserting lenses, ensure you keep the lenses clean in suitable solution etc, etc. There are also different types of lenses ... daily disposable, which I wear, are really thin and you don't have to worry about storing them or making sure they're clean. Monthy disposables are more high maintainence and thicker and then monthly leave in ones, which I found uncomfortable. Anyway good luck!
