Is religion the problem?

I am an agnostic and don't see a problem with people believing in God or not. There are so many variations on the God theme and this whole Catch-22 of God's working being beyond our understanding etc, but consistently it seems to be organized religion that is the problem. Every other Catholic priest seems to be a paedophile (and the Church's history is even more unedifying), most Iman's seem to be at best apologists for terrorist murder and at worst, instigators, whilst Rabbi's allow a religious apartheid to exist in Israel and the occupied territories. In the US there are vicars who think burning the Koran is funny, which whilst it is not illegal is pretty odious. Even Stalin, Mao and Hitler could be accused of being "religionists" in that they created an alternative vision of religion, but with many of the characteristics. So, is religion the problem?

Update:

Thanks for all the responses. I'm not sure they answer the question. Sure, every agnostic knows 1 + 1 = 2, but we don't know the story on the extent of catholic priests paedeophilia, simply because the church covers it up consistently. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, let's say you are no more likely to be abused by a catholic priest than your uncle, probably unfair on your uncle but what sort of church even accepts that sort of statistic? Answer: The Catholic Church.

People may be at the heart of all human problems, but that's just too simplistic. Politics? Solves more problems than the alternative, Soldiers. I think it is probably true that advanced society has outgrown the need for religion, but organised religion needs people.

A lot of that is subjective and "all encompassing", don't you think? That's along the lines of saying "every other black person steals hubcaps". So, be careful that you are not tricked into going down the path of hatred (hatred can take many forms). Historically, atheist regimes have proven no better at bringing peace an harmony to humanity than any other form of human government (e.g., consider the genocide by the hands of the Soviets -- an atheist regime).

The Bible teaches us that the fundamental human problem -- true even for people without faith -- is sin. In our sinfulness, we have been cut off from God, and we are given to hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. Through of all of the suffering, humanity also has a longing to be restored to God. Throughout human history, across the continents divided by oceans, where ever there have been people there has also been religion. People have always had and always will have a longing for God -- to know Him and to be restored to Him -- and trying to eliminate that longing has historically proven to be unsuccessful.

On the other hand, there is a difference between knowing God for yourself rather than through the sinfulness of others.

    Peace be with you.

The problem is found in genesis. The first humans sinned, they rebelled against God, and we all do the same. None of us are good people, in comparison to Jesus. The fallen nature of humans is the root of all the wrongdoing. Which is why we cannot become holy by doing good works but only by accepting the sacrifice that Jesus made.

The problem is people and how they warp the teachings of religions to meet there personal needs.

I think every religion basically has a common theme and that is PEACE.

But humans are animals - greedy and we want power and to control.

So people will take these teachings and mutate them to help them get the power they desire.

Where animals, nothing more. We have desires and we hunger power and control, we want to rule and be the alpha male!

The quran is meant to be the only text for muslims then, oh hold on they have this extra bit called Hadiths, which have nothing to do with there prophet.

The bible was written by a man who never even met jesus, he saw him as a vision, more like after smoking lots of weed!

If God existed there would be one univeral religion - there isnt because of human nature

to be greedy and corrupt and to desire control!

    Where animals - nothing more!

If you take 'religion' in its real meaning of 'living by rules'....then probably, yes.

The worst religion af all (materialism) certainly has much to answer for.

Jesus came to abolish religion and offer a relationship.

Yeah. Those Buddhist and Taoists are hell raising fundamentalists.

Maybe religion isn't the problem. But Charismatic Leaders who use religions to promote personal agendas are the problem.

It's not the religion. It's the people. They do not follow the religion properly and the religion then gets the blame and the wrong Image. Try looking at the religion and finding out about it rather than looking at the people and you will see for yourself

Every other priest is a pedophile?

Like every other agnostic is a mathematician.

Yes. Religion only spreads because of child indoctrination which is psychological abuse in itself. It justifies murder and is majorly out dated with current scientific understanding.

Any atrocities committed in the name of religion can be matched by atrocities committed in the name of politics.

The violent nature of Homo Sapians is the problem, not the vehicle through which they channel their hatred.

Religion is based on truth much as science, but certain people throughout history have sought to manage both in an attempt to spare us from the trouble they can cause.
