Question about turtle tank lighting?

Hi!

So, I have a basking lamp for my turtles that has UVB. But then I was worried about them not getting UVA so I bought a multi-spectrum bulb instead.

But it doesn't emit any heat!

So, should I use the UVA/UVB bulb for a couple of hours a day and switch to the basking bulb for heat?

What should I do?!

Thanks for ideas!

Update:

Amanda - thanks for your idea but I only have 1 lamp and 2 bulbs!

    UVA is produced by any "white light" emitting bulb, including reptile heat bulbs and even the UVB bulb. The turtles should have access to UVB and a basking heat source for 10 - 12 hours a day. The only way to get heat and both UV's from one bulb is to use a MVB (mercury vapor bulb.) MegaRay (http://www.reptileuv.com/) makes a decent MVB.

    I would stick with the basking light...but please do not overheat the turtle!

    the reason Turtles need UVA ultra violet light is because this is Sunlight

    ONLY Sunlight produces Vitamin D on the skin and hides of Animals; (including humans)

    so if the purpose of the UV light is to provide Vitamin D from Sunshine;

    then you can add FISH OIL or Fish Liver oil like Cod Liver Oil to the diet

    just take a fish oil cap; put a drop on turtle pellet; put pellets in tank; so the Vitamin A and Vitamin D in Fish oil or Cod Liver oil give Turtle Vit. D

    You could put the tank in a warmer spot and use the UV light occasionly

    Buy a smaller cheap dome clamp lamp (they're most likly around $10-$20 depending on where you go) and put the UV-B pointed toward your basking spot. Take the lamp you have now and aim it toward the basking spot as well. Since you already have both bulbs, you'll only be out $10 or so and your turtle will have everything he needs. =)

    I had 2 red eared sliders, one I had to grant away and the different one I nonetheless have. I continuously have became off the ordinary in the course of the nighttime. they want to sleep besides. besides, if I kept the ordinary on (the turtle tanks is in my room) i does no longer be in a position to sleep! delight in the reptiles!
