What to expect after cat's surgery?

Hey guys!

My cute but dumb cat found and ate some string that got twisted up inside him. Luckily I got him to the vet really quickly and they operated to remove the string. Cracker (the cat) HATES the vet and is attacking anyone who goes near him - including me!

The op was yesterday and I visited him today and he's really pi**ed with me!

My question is, how will he be when he gets home? Is there anything I can do to make him feel safe and comfortable and trust me again?

Thanks for your help!

Cracker's worried mum.

It's not so much that he's angry with you, it's just that for some cats, being at the vet is SO scary, they forget themselves and just start swinging any time anyone comes near because they're afraid of what will happen to them if the vet, or the staff gets their hands on them. Sometimes they get SO scared that it doesn't register that the person approaching them is their human.

They'll make specific recommendations regarding his diet and how often/how much to feed while he recovers, and I would expect him to go home on pain medication unless they use a long-lasting injectable. They may or may not send him home with antibiotics, again, depending on the hospital's policies.

Once you get him back home and he has a chance to settle in, as long as he's not sore from the surgery, he'll probably very quickly go back to himself again.

Poor thing!! First of all, what a great mom you are to get him his necessary surgery and to be worried about how to properly care for him as he is recovering. 2 yrs ago I came home to a kitty who was hiding and when I picked him up he screamed in pain. I took him to the ER vet and they took xrays and he had broken a small bone that connects his hip to his leg. He had to have surgery and I cannot tell you how many people told me I was crazy for paying for my cat to have surgery. But I would never make a human heal from a broken bone without medical attention and I wasn't about to make my cat do it either. Anyway, you'll need to put him in a place where it's dry, dark, quiet, warm, and there isn't anything to jump up to or fall off of. I put my cat in our small bathroom with some water, food, and a litter box. Go inside every once in awhile and pet him and talk to him very softly and empathetic. Give him somewhere comfortable to lie down, like a cat bed or pillow with lots of towels or blankets. Follow all the instructions the dr gives you about post-surgery stuff. Make sure to give him his pain meds, because cats may not show they are in pain, but that doesn't mean they aren't. I'd keep him in the small room for at least 2 or 3 days and visit with him every couple of hours. It'll take him awhile to get back to his normal self (or at least it did for my cat) but pretty soon he'll forget all about it. Good luck and best wishes to Cracker!!

Your vet will most likely advise you when you go and pick him up.

They will probably want you to change his food for a few days to something more bland and easier to digest, they may even have something there for you.

other than that just the usual that you would expect for anyone recovering from an operation, plenty of rest and affection.

I'm sure he will be more calmer and forgiving once he is back home and not so stressed.

The vet will send him home with aftercare advice. But when he does come home keep him in if he is allowed outside . He may well be a bit upset you and hide up but he will soon come round. Just don't overcrowd him allow him his space .

When he comes back home leave him alone. He will be upset for a while. Check out if he is ok but don't bother him. Eventually he will be himself again, just give him a little bit of time.
