On the Captains yoke in a 737 what is this thing?

On the Captains yoke in a 737, there are two sides.

The left side of the yoke is for the trim wheel and manual trimming of the aircraft, however what is the box for on the right hand side with the numbers in it?

I've been interested in aviation since I was five years old and have never discovered what the devil it's for.

So any answers will of course be very appreciated!

It's not really used anymore, but it is to help you remember your flight level (altitude at which you are cleared to fly).

We put the flight number in there.

It is just a memory item, the numbers don't do anything.

Source(s): I used to change them to 007 when I worked on jets.
